They used to be real strict on this. I can tell you though that a .org is set to have a higher ranking in the SEs.

I have a bunch of .org feeder sites that I have had for 10+ years when they loosed up the requirements.

I've seen it done, and don't see a problem with it.

I've always looked at .org as for non-commercial use. Perhaps that is outdated thinking, but I recall having to jump through hoops to register a .org even if you were a legitimate non-profit organization.

Personally, I'd never use a .org for porn. There are many people that still perceive .org as a non-profit zone, and putting a porn site on one just gives the zealots that much more ammunition to use against us.

.org isn't enforced.

Consequently it's most commonly used the same as ".net". People really want the .com of their desired name and they settle for .net or .org. And consequently if they do any branding drive traffic to the own of the .com. ;)

The question wasn't whether or not you CAN put porn on a .org, but whether you or not you SHOULD put porn on a .org.

The question wasn't whether or not you CAN put porn on a .org, but whether you or not you SHOULD put porn on a .org.

As a general rule, I respect the original intent of the TLD's.

Further, there's typically not a monetary benefit to NOT doing so. As I said before, building a kick ass .org or .net site benefits the owner of the .com as they get your type-ins more often than not.

Now, the one time I will use a .org or .net is when I get a site that is big enough that I do want to protect the brand, I grab the .net and .org just to keep anyone else from trying to piggy back and play SEO games on the back of my branding efforts.
