here is their traffic rank yesterday...52,387....
That is pathetic. You know what? Marginal webmasters are bailing. A sign of the times. I kind of like it myself.

So, here is the question. How many of you still think traffic is king? In this market, all the traffic in the world won't necessarily pay the rent. Good content will. So what are you going to do?

I flip flop on this one like a politician these days.

But I'll take traffic. Content without traffic is worthless, if I have the raw hits I can always find some desperate bastard to buy 'em.

But if I have great content, I don't need desperate bastards.

It's a chicken and egg scenario. It doesn't really matter which you have first, you need to then acquire the other.

The key is matching one to the other.

I agree, Toby. But at the moment, content is king. I believe you, as a focussed webmaster, understand this better than most.

I would agree that I spend far more time locating fresh, quality niche content than I do finding new traffic sources. However, they are two completely different dynamics.

Content gets consumed and has to be replenished regularly. Traffic sources on the other hand just keep on flowing, requiring only occassional maintainence and replacement.

Interesting thing to me about that chart is you can literally see the day school let out for summer vacation.

gfy.com has a different Alexa rating than gofuckyourself.com

Anyhow, that's their problem. On Oprano's board you can be turned into a superhero by a world famous artist! So phooey on GFY.

I never understand saying that content or traffic are king. A king with no subjects is useless. If I have to put a royal spin on things I'd say that traffic is King and content is the Queen, because without one the other is meaningless. However, I've seen plenty of sites with poor quality content make money but I haven't seen any with no traffic make money so traffic will always be the most important element.

That's what I SAY!!

I look at it this way... if you have a killer restaurant and no one knows about you, you will go out of business.

If you have a shitty restaurant but it's in a high traffic area, you are going to stay in business.

Traffic is king... unless...

Imagine a street with nothing but homeless shelters and churches. Imagine the traffic, so many people in and out of there all the time. No way any business would survive.

For me, many tube sites are like homeless shelters. There ain't no money in them, no matter how popular they are.

It's a matter of physics and energy.

Think of traffic as a unit of 'attention'. 1,000 hits is 1,000 units of attention or UOAs. This is energy and a commodity, asset. If your site gets 1,000 UOAs per day that's your solid value. You now have attracted 1,000 UOAs and need to convert them into another form of energy, money. You use many tactics, strategies, etc. that's called marketing. Once you've converted them let's say your ratio is out of 1,000 UOAs you convert 100 into sales. Now you have a conversion ratio of 10% or a CR of 10%. That's what's your bottom line you build on. Better quality products, strategies, that INCREASE the bottom line are what works and you keep doing it. It's about equations. So of course your first battle is to build traffic or UOA. Buy it, attract it, create it, maintain it, convert it. You're an 'Attention Farmer' and that's the foundation.

Alexa isn't the greatest indicator of traffic accuracy. Major programs will still always go to GFY to make announcements and skip other forums. When something big happens, those involved generally post on GFY. It's a good board if you take it for what its worth.

So true - Alexa is the Neilson rating of the internet - I have PLR in there with 2 names - like GFY and gofuckyourself - both are vastly different and totally in accurate -

But on the same note GFY has slowed of late as have all boards, i was on porn city a week or so back and it had "one post" for the entire day i visited so ...

- it's summer time folks - people are out and about!

D-man, GFY isn't that slow, but the content is gone. a few years ago, it was about 50% business and 50% bullshit (like most boards) now it is a cesspool dominated by idiots like frank and metaman and a couple of other losers who likely don't even work in the business fulltime. Tons of surfers, tons of posts aimed at surfers (the famous Would You Hit It threads) and that's about it. Any chance of business getting done over there disappeared a while ago.

I typically like to think Oprano isn't full of amateurs, but here's the correct answer. Traffic matches itself to content, not the other way around. You bring the content, you market it appropriately, and the people who are interested in your content will buy from you.

It's sort of like the differences between qualifying your clicks, and blind clicks. Nobody does blind traffic anymore that I know of.

Actually there is a use for blind traffic as well. As far as hit filtering. Lots of people had different methods.
One this is for sure. Gone are the days of just throwing up a banner and getting slaes on any site.

Yes, to a degree. It's the old shotgun theory. Throw enough lead in the air something is bound to run into it.

Personally, I'd rather have 10K of niche targetted traffic over 100K of general porn traffic. I'll make more money from the former.

The boards I follow have unique uses.
None of them are a one stop shop for everything I need.
Including Oprano!

Actually, there are very few real webmasters over there. I see mainly surfers and guys that think they are webmasters since they submit a few galleries a week to TGPs and do nothing else. Many of those "submitters" don't even know the basics about even HTML.

Open a liquor store, a pawn shop, a numbers game and a loan operation on that same block and then tell me you're not making so much money you have to have a car come by every hour to take the overflowing cash outta your hands!!

You gotta know how to make money. If you do, you can make money any place ... a homeless street included.

... Btw, hi Raw Alex! :)

Good morning! How you doing?

Point taken... my thought was more along the lines of why there isn't a McDonalds in the middle of skid row. :)

Well, having dealt with message boards full of sig ho's you can count on boards like Oprano to have professionals who get the ball rolling.

So I always say, "Pros before ho's!"
