OK, so a couple of days ago I tried to register for this little thingy. First, I wanted to register two people, and it seems that can't be done. So I do it twice. First time, I forget a field, return to fill it in, and all my info is gone and needs to be re done. Now this seems like the internet a decade ago. Cheap online travel agencies etc. I would have thought this would have been done better by porn people. Now I am a little annoyed but press on. After all the pleasant looking pornographers on their home page look efficient and ready to help me in my consumer needs. So I finally.....like half hour later....get two forms filled and sent off. No reply. No confirmation. Nada. So I look for a phone number like any real business would have. No phone number. That is sooooo bush league, but I soldier on and fill out their little form for help. No reply. So is this show still on? I mean I have the room reservations. But I have no idea if I have show passes. Does this company always do business this way? Anyone here rep these guys and have some answers? And do any of you look like those smiling cheerful reps on their home page?

Well... by my magical powers of deduction I'm able to figure out which of the registrants you are. Yes I may be 10 years behind the times, but I sure do look pleasant and am often smiling and cheerful.

Honestly I would have thought that "Please include the information for just one person with each form submission" on the registration page would have been pretty self explanatory? Well, you have my phone number now... next time feel free to call and I'll happily walk you thru it and tell you a few jokes and a bedtime story to boot.

This begs the question though... If you are concerned that we are a "real business" and our "ponderous" ways wasted "like a half hour" of your precious time, then why on gods green earth are you going?

I suppose there is a reason for that, and maybe I skipped right over that, but in this case, I am just a customer like any other that needs to be led to the join button. Its not that my time is precious, but when I hit the back button and lose all my info, it is annoying. Why am I going? To tell you the truth to meet a few people I haven't met face to face. I like San Francisco and it is an excuse to go there and that would be about it. As for ponderous, yes it is. This is the internet where folks lose interest in less than three seconds and usually confirmation is instant. Or did I just fall through the looking glass and only imagined the software possibilities that 2008 has to offer? I think I will pass on the condescension and the bed time story and try and be a customer. You know the guys that keep us all in business, pay our rent. The guys we have to be nice to and try and make their on line experience a pleasure. Maybe even post a phone number on a website so if there is any confusion, one may get in touch with a customer service type person. Or is that there in plain view as well. Just asking Jay. I am sure you are a pleasant and cheerful fellow. It is your website that was giving me grief. I can only imagine the time it would take to sign up....say ten employees.
But I am sure it will be fun.

Well, considering that this is the first year that YNOT has owned the show now that Fay has retired and there are only a couple of us doing all the work, your patience while we try to make a seamless transition is certainly appreciated.

You sent an email thru the "CONTACT" form on the website and I responded to you, the customer, within 24 hours and did what I could to pacify you.

You can't please all the people all the time.

No you can't. But I know I try hard. In a business where most of your type of product is readily available for free, we who survive have to try even harder to please all of the people. This history of show ownership was not something I knew anything about. But I do know one thing, that when you press the pay button on any website, confirmation is usually received immediately. Its not that I am impatient. Its not that I am dissing you here. Perhaps you should look at it as customer feedback to improve your sign up process so this discussion would never have happened. I think you would have done the same thing if you signed up for a website and nothing happened for 24 hours. I know that I have bailed on travel booking sites for similar reasons. Its just a thought. I am sure you and your show will do well.

I think you misrepresented a number of things in your post. But two important ones:

1) After you filled out the contact form, you got a reply from Jay in less than 24 hours.

2) After you filled out the form, you were told that the submission was received, thanks for registering, and that you would be contacted by email at a later time. So yeah, you got confirmation that what you submitted was received. In fact, here's what it said:

"SUBMISSION RECEIVED: THANK YOU!

On behalf of Cybernet Expo and our Registration Sponsor High Def Riches (http://www.highdefriches.com/), thank you for registering for the 2008 Cybernet Expo show in San Francisco!

We have received the registration information you have submitted, and will be contacting you soon via the email address you supplied."

Because we process payments manually at the moment, you don't get the email confirmation immediately. You get the one on the screen for starters and then when the payment is processed, THEN you get the email receipt. I get that you want instant gratification with that email receipt, but there is a good reason why we process payments manually at the moment. But who knows, that could change in the future. So far you're the only one complaining.

As for phone numbers... Gonzo, why don't you publish your phone number on your contact form? You have advertisers, right? How Bush League! ;) I guess I don't see a problem with this... lots of online companies operate this way. Lots of very well respected companies. I'll take the suggestion under advisement though but, to be honest, have no plans to change that right now.

Now Rhetorical, I wonder if your own business stands up to similar scrutiny? I don't know you, so please enlighten me... what is your business? What do you do in this industry? I'd kind of interested in checking out your products and services, maybe I can repay your kind suggestions for improvement? ;)

I have customer service numbers. Both 800 and standard exchange numbers. they operator 24/7. No need to get your knickers in a twist because I was pointing out what I thought was a weakness from my point of view. A contact number where a real person answers the phone is still the gold standard of business. Instant processing is the lifeblood of the net. Anything else pisses people off and I am sure you have been in that position, hunting through a website looking for a number and maybe, just maybe it is buried under a bunch of faq's, online "help" or any other amounts of stuff that just deflect you from talking to a real person which you, as a customer, are looking for at that time. Especially in retail. It is a good subject for discussion. Should websites have customer service numbers?

edit: and btw, this was never meant to be a pissing, bitching thread. Its just business and a discussion of such. Sheesh, it amazes me how these things can spiral when people jump on various bandwagons.

Now you're talking my language... I also grew up on the Pacific Coast, although in central CA, and then later moved to TX, where I am now. I come from a family of salmon fishermen, so I always had fresh Pacific salmon growing up. There's nothing better.

Don't expect good salmon though... I believe they are not allowing fishing off the pacific coast at the moment for salmon due to a serious shortage of fish. And the farmed stuff just isn't the same.

I am anticipating some great meals and business from this show.

This one is always a tune up for me when I go. its less hassle than some other shows and a great mix of business people there.

I dont hold it against them that they are from Ynot. They put on a great show despite it!

The seminars have been informative and well attended. Its certainly a chance to break out with people who were asking questions or speaking to learn a little more.

Im taking a 5 hour flight out there Im confident.

Toby attended his first one last year so he can give you a clean perspective.

Hes going back so Id think that might be a :okthumb:

BBQ on the west coast? C'mon, that's like hoping for good fresh seafood in Nebraska.

Rhetorical, I wasn't planning on attending Cybernet this year but now that I know you're coming I might have to reconsider.

P.S. I have a toll-free phone number listed on my site. Now I can't figure out if that makes me bush league or a well respected company.

Well, its a step in the right direction. its an easy thing to put on a site and it adds to customer confidence.
