The Mississippi State House is proposing a law that would ban restaurants from serving fat people with a BMI higher than 30.
You could say that's no worse than laws preventing bartenders from serving another shot of whiskey to that guy who just chipped a tooth falling off his stool. right?
On the other hand, of course, an obese person is not going to use the opportunity afforded by an unnecessary plate of chicken to pinch the ass of the waitress? puke in the bathroom sink? take a piss next to your dumpster and ram into an oncoming car on the way home?
So there's really not much of a comparison.
More seriously though,
if it passes, will other states do the usual copy-cat policy?
and would it work? Wouldn't the nation's fat people, faces hot with the shame of being weighed publicly on a scale outside the Berns Steakhouse??? or simply drive straight to the nearest Krispy Kreme and pick up a few dozen chocolate to cool off?
or maybe hook up with your local corner crack dealer Maybe he's got a few cheese burger in his stash? :bustingup

Hmm. So they would ban serving ANYTHING at all to fat folk... encouraging them, perhaps, to only eat fat-back encrusted collards and fried chicken at home, I suppose.
There are a lot of interesting extrapolations that could be drawn though, should something like that ever be passed... For example, could a grocery store be legally restricted from selling whipped cream or ice cream to someone with high cholesterol or BMI?

This would never pass into law, I agree.
It's way to complex to determine every time a person would walk into or order from any sort of food selling service. and aside from being to much of a financial consumption to track all the time.
Part of my point was hoping that people would see how ridiculous this bill is proposing and how "us" as a society need babysitting on "what & where" we decide to eat cause "we" as a society are not able to care for ourself, So like the way most stupid laws are passed from American Elected official are proposed.., it's a form of Government Babysitting that the American seem to require. :idontknow
It amazes me that someone would be so fucking worried about how FAT our America Community is, But no one seems to worry about the people who go to bed hungry every evening or possibly haven't eaten a square meal in day. How come a bill isn't passed to assure that every American goes to bed with a full stomach every night?

First off, getting between a fat boy and dinner isn't a good place to be....
And yeah, this has zero chance of becoming a law, it's a publicity stunt.
However, the more frightening prospect is that there are a few people who would take it seriously and might even think it's a good idea. Society is slowly killing personal freedom and individualism. People have no sense of responsiblity and would rather government take care of them it seems.
Let's protect the fat asses, the smokers, the tokers by passing laws to protect them from themselves. Screw that, let darwin do his thing.
We caudle and protect the stupid. If we had any natural predators, we wouldn't need welfare, lots of people who currently overbreed would never make it back from the watering hole alive.

There are a number of things that could conceiveably be done in this arena - none of them that I think are good ideas, mind you, but I could envision having to show a recent doctor's eval to be able to order certain items - much like showing ID to ourchase smokes or booze.
Of course, there is an easier solution, but that involves just doing away with crappy food and encouraging personal accountability... and we all know how much the average American hates both of those ideas.

.
This is the important part of the thread.
And the taxpayers are paying some Jackass to spend time writing this down into a law.

How about we do this: Mind our own business and let people live their lives the way they want?

I am all on board for that.
However, we have somehow become a nation of busybodies - as evidenced by... well, everything in our culture currently.
Personally, I am not a fan of gov't regulation in pretty much any arena... But I can see the dangerous directions this idea could be taken in and the simplicity in rolling over and letting personal liberites be further trampled by a nanny-state.

My point exactly. We should stomp these idiots that come up with these ideas...

But... but... then people might have to take RESPONSIBILITY for themselves!
... and heaven knows we can't have people thinking. Something good might happen :P

Think about this for a second please Liz,
We blame our own build social culture for not being able to fend for themselfs? Thats wrong.
But is it all our fault? Our obsession for survive in the world, (I say obsession in term of obtaining profit for survival or just financial gain) we have let develop into a strain of our daily lifestyles & upbringings to the point that society can't find or waste the time on this so-called petty stuff ,,,"Let our gov take care of it, Thats why I pay taxes, right?"
We no longer are able to care for ourself, our children, our elderly, or even our overweight fat fucks :whistling
As a natural instinct we are on a constant inner mission to seek fulfillment, and we find it in millions of different way, through drugs, porn, shopping, food, and many more.
We disguise them and call them either hobbies, habits or addiction, but has long as we find a form of pleasure in them, they will continue to grow and form in our surrounding world, leaving less and less of our natural and needed responsibilities to our local law enforcement and our forever caring government.
