Or at least that’s what television news outlets would have you believe based on what I've seen lately. For a span of about 8 hours last night and this morning, television media essentially bombarded me with messages about the dangers of sexual predators, particularly as it pertains to children. If you haven’t noticed, there’s been a substantial increase in this type of discussion in the media. Now, I’m all for protecting children from dangerous people. After all, it i...

The media's method of information dissemination has long been something that concerns me - how certain topics will become a locus of scrutiny for a period of time and then seemingly drop off the radar. This is merely the latest example.

I've always been disturbed by the sensationalism of topics which ought to be seriously considered and the manner in which they become entertainment, instead of a catalyst for honest discussion and change in the areas of concern.

Consider, for example, how very long child exploitation has been a major concern for society as a whole - and yet, really, what substantive efforts have been made to make changes to our systems to stop the crisis that's intermittantly flooded our airwaves for years?

Precisely: none. Scott brings up an excellent point that we either "rehabilitate" these people - and then continue to punish them - or we simply teach them new tools to further their criminal careers by giving them closer contact with other persons with similar goals and ideals and send them on their merry way to wreak more havoc.

And don't get me started on parenting...

What gives me the willies about this more than anything is the fact that this is entertainment. People don't watch To Catch a Predator because they want to learn about the dangers of the internet and how to best protect their young'uns. They're watching it because, whether they admit it or not, they're getting off on it. They might not literally be stroking off or twanging the banjo, but they are being stimulated in a rather twisted way.

Another great example of this syndrome was when that John Mark Karr weirdo confessed to raping and killing JonBenét Ramsey. America watched that shit on television every night and drooled, just hoping they'd get to hear the true morbid details about how some pretty little blond white girl was literally destroyed from the inside out by a sociopath. I want to blame the media, I really do. But we're the monsters in this equation. Only instead of being predators, we're more akin to scavengers.

What the predators leave behind, we pick at and swallow until there's nothing left.

Hence the excerpt from my article:

Well fuck you, MSNBC/NBC. Fuck you, CNN. Fuck you, Dr. Phil. Fuck you, Nancy Grace…

…But most of all, fuck you, America. Fuck you for you lack of decency. Fuck you for your lack of self-awareness. Fuck you for your bloodlust and your morbid, psychotic, sexual fetishes that only serve to line the pockets of news corporations that cater to your unfortunate brand of emotional illness with cold, hard advertising dollars.

Agreed. There's a reason I don't watch television - if I want to watch ritualised, fetishistic, masturbatory bloodlust, I'll rent a Fulci film.

Interestingly, it's not a new phenomenon at all - it's simply much more pervasive. When Larry Flynt was fighting his obscenity charges (over and over and over again), this was precisely the point he referenced: why is porn obscene, but the news is not? What's more disgusting: the human form or the group-think that gets its rocks off by scavanging on pain and suffering of others?

(And, hun, I read your whole article, 'cos that's what I do, you know :P)
