Ok, so what's the pick of the litter of the off the shelf blogging software this week?

Word Press?

Most of my stuff is currently proprietary or hybrid as I like to build in some "unique" capabilities. But I have a new project I'm about to send down to the FFN Skunkworks that is going to be best suited for a canned solution.

wordpress is the best

if there is something you want it to do, someone has created a plugin for it

How much of a server hog is it?

not really sure...I have never had any load issues or mysql crashes because of it

I also have my wordpress install totally tweaked out with extra cache and shit, so I have no clue what a raw install would be like

I suggest definitely getting wp-cache plugin

Just trying to get a feel whether it needs it's own database server. I can tune the heck out of mysql. I can get 200+ db transactions per second out of even a fairly small box.

then no, you won't need a seperate server

I have over 200 blogs on my server right now, some of them getting upwards of 1000 uniques a day, not sure what the total for all blogs is, but regardless, my shit flies

Ahhhh...the good ole days before everyone knew how to do RSS....

I could churn 'em out at a rate of 100-1000 a day and maintain some decent quality behind them and no one could detect the automation.

Have to be a bit more sneaky now to stay under the radar of the SE spam detectors.

I am addicted..I have found I can't start just one. If I add one I end up adding five or six. This week I have another 10 or so going up. I just want to make sure I don't do too many that I can't update them because I write all my own posts and don't use feeds.

I am suppose to be writing a book so I am trying to use it as a way to keep me writing. Plus, I do a lot of fetish blogs and that is just better to do by hand because even a lot of sponsors don't actually 'talk the language' of the people they are targeting. I guess I should try some feeds on new blogs but I am untrusting of others..lol

That's interesting stuff... I always wanted to be a techie type. I have often thought of getting some sites going again, but it seems like things are out of my league these days.

There's still plenty of money being made. But if you're thinking pure affiliate model, it's certainly not as easy as it was "back in the day". The main reason is the free traffic sources pretty much dont exist.

You can do TGP if you have something unique to push and can stand the bandwidth, but conversions blow chunks typically. You can do better with paid placements, but then that's not "free". SE paid placements are not for the meek or those of small budgets.

But long gone are the days of quickly getting a site up to a few thousand hits a day with a combination of SE and link lists.

Plenty of opportunity for making walking around money, but I'd hate to start from scratch right now and try to pay rent with nothing but affiliate income.

Oh how I miss the old days of Yahoo. :okthumb:

I come across articles once in a while that get me thinking. I spend so much time in the data center that I am REALLY out of the loop on what's going on *inside* all those servers, so when I read that plentyoffish.com does $300k a month from AdSense I just think "holy crap!" I also read about someone (I forget his name at the moment) doing about $100k a month, churning out automated blogs, etc... it just boggles my mind.

I still remember the day we went shirt shopping and you were so excited you had scraped your hand on a server case doing "techie work" :okthumb:

Which goes to show you traffic is still king. All you have to do is come up with that site idea that everyone wants to come visit.

There are lots of them that have come into being in last couple of years or so including YouTube, MySpace, etc.

$300K a month from AdSense is good, but it's that YouTube deal with Google that makes me get a chubby. I've always been on the prowl for an opportunity to be involved with an IPO.

Youd be surprised how much adsense can bring into places.

But alas, we grew too fast and needed *real* techies, not just a guy who could install linux and rack up a server. ;)

You Tube amazes me as well. Tony takes good care of me, just not to the tune of $1.6 billion. haha
