Hey yo....

It's survey time...

What do you use and why? Charcoal? Gas? Anyone out there man up and have a real honest to goodness wood pit in the backyard?

Or how about some of those high end hybrids with smokers, infrared, etc?

Gas grills suck ass. Not even remotely worth cooking on. Charcoal on a webber grill is the way to go! :okthumb:

You know that Jack cooks on the open charcoal pit with cinder blocks to hold up his grate. He is totally old school.

Yup, I'm not picky either. The high tech stuff is convenient and all, and I may someday buy one. But give me a bag of charcoal and a cooler full of meat, and I'll find a low tech way to make it tasty wherever I go.

Plain old iron grills at parks and campgrounds are just fine. and as you say, in a pinch, concrete blocks and anything that amounts to wire mesh. True rednecks will use an old refrigerator rack before they started putting lexan in 'em.

I'll post some food pics later....but I better eat first.

This shouldn't even be a question. Charcoal all the way. Hardwood charcoal. I get mine from Big Green Egg.

My grandfather used to cook a cow over a pit a few times a year and I've been to lots of parties where people cook over a firepit, but me+fire+no means of control=bad.

I don't have a Big Green Egg - I just use their charcoal. Best ever, IMO. I use the standard Weber with it. My brother has a BGE and likes it, but in 15 years, he's probably used it 20 times. Just takes too long to get things cooked for him. Then again, he's one of those "gas grill" people.

I have 2 Webers and a gas grill and use them all. Cooking on charcoal obviously adds the most flavor, but it's far less convenient than gas. If I've got a choice, I'd cook the steaks on the charcoal grill, but cooking them on the gas grill still beats cooking them on the Jenn-Aire inside.

Propane and propane accessories.

when it's 117 outside who has time to wait for fire to burn down the charcoal.

but normally i let my fingers do the walking to Memphis BBQ and then roll thru the drive thru. :okthumb:

Good point Docholly. I know I'm far more likely to use charcoal in the cooler months and the gas grill in the summer. I'll be grilling lobster and steak on the 4th if anyone wants to come hang out. Of course, Peaches and the other charcoal purists will probably pass and say it will taste lousy. :)

I"ll grill all 365 days of the year up here in WI! gas grills don't even come close to charcoal cooking. When I first got married we went over to another couple's house quite often to hang out and talk and have some dinner and drinks and they always wanted me to cook because they liked the way I seasoned and grilled them. One day we came over and he had a bright shiny new gas grill and I told him there was no way I was using that and to bring out the old webber. LOL

I grill from mid september to mid may almost every day..we have a big mutha Weber that my son's dad won at some casino drawing here. It took me like 5 years to start to use it. Now I just hit the starter button and go. My neighbors all laugh at me in the "winter" cuz i'm out grilling. However I don't think that 60 degress can be called winter.

Instead of an Atlanta outing at a restaurant, we should go take over a spot at one of the lakes for an afternoon and evening.

I'll accept.

And as leader of this operation, you'll find one of my strengths is how well I delegate....

Peaches already volunteered to be in charge of rounding up all of the supplies, I know she can make a list...so that's her job.

GonZo's job is to find the place, figure out the date and time and get all the invites out.

Jace can be in charge of entertainment.

Anyone else need work?

Just be sure to play something that will repel mexicans...

Everytime I've tried to do anything on the lake in the last 4-5 years, if you leave even a corner of a table unused, a Mexican family will want to stake claim to it even if there are a dozen or more people in your group already in a small pavillion.

If you try to say it's taken, they'll no habla. If you dont get rude and shoo 'em away, then their 40 family members show up and before you know it you're outnumbered and can hear nothing but latina music.

propane... and I have been using it for years... I am waftic (if anyone remembers sniglets) so that means if i am within a half mile of a charcoal grill the smoke goes right into my eyes and burns like hell... doesnt matter where i move to.. the smoke'll find me
propane thank you :)

I'm all about the charcoal... It's always worth the wait!

The reason we are totally anti-propane is because in 2000 our place burned down and the propane tank from our barbeque did it's safety-thing and vented all it's fuel (instead of exploding like a bomb) into the fire which had been started by some kid outside our balcony. Lost everything and had no insurance at the time. Kinda puts a bad taste in the mouth when stuff like that happens.

OK.. This is my kind of thread!

I actually like BOTH!
Gas is great for convenient weekday cooking, but charcoal is preferred when I have more time. If I have a party or something I will use both. I have certain things I like to cook over gas, like asperigus or even marinated chicken breasts. But if I'm cooking a nice steak, I love the charcoal flavor with hickory wood chips. It can't be beat!

I do throw some wood chips in the smoker box on the gas grill from time to time for a pleasant taste too.

I invite all you BBQ/grilling lovers to check out www.sharky.com for a great resource:-) haha.

I haven't grilled too much in the last 8-9 months because of my weight loss. I am now down about 145lbs and am ready to start cooking it up again. My lifestyle has changed enough that I no longer crave the HUGE portions I ate before and I actually enjoy grilling the healthier foods when I have time.

My passion is still grilling and I love to do it with style and flare!

Grilling competition anyone?

Yes, I used to ONLY eat heinz 57 on my well done steaks. But now I prefer no sauce and a medium steak. If I go to a friends house who doesn't know how to cook a steak or they get cheap pieces of meat I still enjoy the Heinz 57 to mask the taste! hahah

Nope. But I do know a great steak when I eat it. I just came back from the rocky mountains and had Alberta beef in Alberta and there is none better. I usually buy Kobe beef raised in North America, but this beats the shit out of it and puts USDA prime to shame. I still love pan fried. But you need great beef to do it with.

no no no...you need to do it "Motor City style"
Steal a shopping cart.
Jack a car and strip 2 tires off.
Shoot 1 stray dog/cat/rat with your "Nine"
Throw the tires into the cart, rims and all.
Marinde the tires with gasoline.
Season the tires with Kosher salt, and fresh cracked black pepper.
(I don't know where you jack your tires from, but mine don't come already seasoned)
Ignite
Wait 15 minutes and then flip the tires.
Wait till tires are smoldering, and then place your meat ie stray dog/cat/rat into the child seat on the shopping cart.
Grill to perfection
Serve.
Enjoy!
