I think it is a cross between that as well as trying to cash in on the gay market, Showtime has been running their gay and lesbian shows for a few years now and they both do very well, Gay programing = good money now days.

Also I think Chase is trying to "dare I say it" bring more reality to his mob families, by throwing in more issues and probs that show up in our daily news.
