The town I live in doesn't have one but one of the neighboring towns does and just had a referendum on modifying the ban which lost. I don't know about you but it drives me nust to see these bans in place and I'm not even a smoker. Now the state is considering imposing a statewide ban and it just drives me nuts.

I smoke sometimes. Not a lot but one of those smokers that smokes when I drink. I left Florida that has no smoking to a state where people smoke everywhere. I hate it. I won't eat some place that has it.

NY you cant smoke in any building at all. No bars, clubs, restaurants, etc.... I am not a smoker so I like it. Its nice to come home after a night out and not smell like smoke....

Just as alcholic beverages vanished during prohibition, and drug use and gambling have disappeared thanks to laws banning them, I'm certain that this type of law will erase smoking in a very short time.

Always nice to see smart people in charge of things.

Um... hate to break it to you Grump but the gambling industry has EXPLODED over the last 15 years or so. 48 of 50 states now have some form of legal gambling whereas it wasn't anywhere near that many just as recently as 20 years ago.

I'm actually in VA even worse. They grow the shit here. In fact my farm was once an old tobbaco farm. I think its still trying to grow wild down by the creek.

Camel anyone?

I was being sarcastic about the historical fact that almost every law intended to ban things that people want has little or no effect.

Guess I'm in the minority. I can udnerstand workplce bans I guess but it drives me nuts for bars. A smoke free bar just doesn't seem like a bar in my book. The ban has hurt the bar industry big time here in my area. They are loising out on income because of the ban which drives me nuts even more because that means the people who whine about bars being smoky weren't even going to the bars in the first place or going now that the ban is in effect that they whined for to be put in place.

It drives me even more nuts to know that they strategically place the votes on spring election times like this past tuesday because they know it's a lot easier for them to win the vote at that time that in the fall when a much higher turnout will be in place.

well I agree that some places should be allowed to have smoking areas if they are set up for that. The problem is many places are not and in a place like NYC space is high.

I think a lot of non-smokers go to bars. Many have dealt with it by opening outdoor patios.

Why not leave such a decision up to the business owner? If they want to operate a smoking establishment, or provide a non-smoking section then they can. People either will or will not patronize or work at the business based on their own desires.

Choices are rapidly being replaced by laws in this country.

I agree with that. Same thing for porn- let it be a choice and not a law. We have enough damn laws.

funny thing is that country was formed by people that were fleeing other countries that had restrictive laws imposed by religious groups and kings.

I'm with you.

In my county, there's a twenty five foot rule.....this is getting ridiculous. I wish some folks would keep their kids twenty five feet away from me...or take them the hell home when they cry.....

Anyone ever hear of the terminology: ventilation system? Put the non smokers in one section...and the smokers in the other...turn on fan and everyone is happy. Jeez. One would think this is rocket science.
