I remember back in the BBS days when we made ansi graphics using all kinds of symbols. That was some time consuming shit. I use to have a hypodermic needle that was stuck into a modem and it said INJECT YOUR MODEM WITH KINK or some crap like that. It blinked, had colors and everything.

I still use "~".

In unix, you can use it to quickly move to any user's directory, which is why it was also used by webservers to do much the same thing.

cd ~user

Puts you in "user"s home directory....if you have sufficient privs.
