I'm going to have to disagree.

First of all I don't think "someone has put a muzzle on him" as far as Gonzo being not as outspoken as he might be... last I checked Gonzo was his own person, free to do or not do as he pleased. Maybe the situation has changed, but I highly doubt it.

Your last bit in there about how it "has to be about business to be popular" is ...amusing. I may not have been around as long as you, but GFY is pretty popular, and its about drama more than business from what I've seen. PC is about *glances in that window* According to the thread I'm in currently, its about how long its last been since one of their members last masturbated, and a bunch of other random and mostly uninformational threads (no offense to anybody over there, I do enjoy that board sometimes but I have to be in the right mood). MP has a rather unique flavor of celebrity nip slips (I've never seen a board quite so determined on posting the most recent updated celeb nip slips, as that one... its a fun board) Adult Insider has a really awesome little "BIZ" thread icon, *hint hint* and has a definite minority of "biz" threads on the board's front page at the moment. That'd be where I frequent the most often, probably. In none of these places, did I feel a sense of "community" from talking about business, and they're all pretty popular, so the only board that I can think of off the top of my head that has been popular by being only about business for the majority part, is GG&J.

As far as advertising to newbies being wasted money, not necessarily. I suppose it depends on what you're advertising. If its sponsor advertising, newbies are FAR more likely to see a banner for a sponsor & click on it & sign up & make the board money, than "old school" board members who have long since been signed up with said sponsors. (just an example) ...I'll admit too, that this is another thing that I particularly like about this board... there's a variety of types of banners, content, hosting, models meet producers, (according to the banner that's blinking at me right now) ...its not just ALL sponsors.

The last sentence is one that I can & do agree with. I'd put a LOT of emphasis on the INTERESTING bit however. I don't want to see this board turn ...uninteresting, like a lot of them are (For me at least, but then again I'm apparently a snob lol).

The style of humor & mentality that seems to be prevalent on this board in particular, is what draws me personally to it. I've learned more from this board than probably all of the others combined. For me, its a combination of being able to chat with people I feel I can connect with on a variety of levels, and learn things from my superiors about life & business both.

Ultimately, its the LACK of "irrelevant yet 'interesting'" threads and the presence of relevant AND interesting threads, which makes this particular board #1 in my books.

No muzzles here JR. Ive just been distracted for the last 6-8 months working on some of my own projects. The fire still burns but Ive pointed it elsewhere which I would be happy give you a preview of sometime soon.

In a sense I agree with points from all of you. The board has to find its own level and sense of community. We are long past the point where I personally make my mark and inject a dose of my personality into the board. Oprano is the sum of all of us...good and bad.

hell no. I bought that place in florida because I knew it was a good investment, which it was, made 200% in 2 years. Sold that and bought something bigger and nicer. Still doing the farm thing.

Yep a CJ7 and 1985. Its the BIG REAL jeeps. It runs and goes over just about anything. I need some work done to it tho to get it on the street. Once I do I want to paint it something funky. Don't know what yet but it will be eye catching.

some people do not have the tenacity to stay and I feel/ have felt for a long time that it should cange and a place for them is what the industry needs.

I now have a say in that place and can choose to make it so.

( kinda like a congressman that says the other side sucks, but once he gets in office fails to do what his principles were that made him want to go in the first place) I will not bow to what was, or what has been. I think new days are what will be successful in the future. I believe that new people and new products will take us there . If I am wrong then time will tell. Just to make a point. I never got paid by Oprano until I became a mod and I did have duties besides helping to keep the board going by posting.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it all. But I dont think anyone has ever said all the old crew needs to hit the road. What I have read into things is that the old dogs may need to learn a few new tricks or at least be tolerant of new patrons.

We have a lot of people who hang out here who have been here from day one, some of them are out or nearly out of the business. But they still hang out because they are part of the community. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that, many of them are funny and intillegent and contribute a lot to the board.

I think what everyone needs to be careful of though is where business threads are concerned not to make it a hostile environment for newbies or people who are doing business in new ways.

A beat down for anyone new is almost a tradition, but it has also stifled new blood. Very few have passed the initiation and survived to earn a bit of respect and hang around in recent years. Joe is one, Pushpills is another.

The thing is if someone comes thru and starts asking questions about TGPs, the shave on traffic trading scripts, etc, the correct answer isn't to jump on 'em and tell 'em why giving away tons of free porn are the reason the business is no longer as good as it was in 1998.

I see I see said the blind man. So business deals got canned.

But, the possibillity is that it isn't the people who expressed their opinion's fault. The thread was initially about the Hun banning paycounters and such. Shemp came in on page 2 and expressed his opinion.

That the rest of the group did not necessarilly agree with him (but actually, if you read the thread, many did) is not the groups fault.

What I did was challenge (in no uncertain terms) a business model that has cost this industry MILLIONS of dollars. I don't care how you want to wrap it that's the bottom line

Shemps explanation was he felt he didn't have to explain the right for TGP's to exist as he had already done that

You cant hire 4 people thats never ran a board before...call it adultnetsurprise II and expect it to work. Gear is nice but it shouldnt be used to drive posts and traffic with a "points" system.

The folks that have wandered over here from Xpeeps are looking for 2 things.

1. Honest advice on which sponsors to use and some building blocks to help develop a strategy to market them.

2. Some seed traffic to get them started.

While we were pissing I started laying the groundwork for number 2.

You can hear direct from the surfers what they like and dislike as well as some of the personalities that make up the sites.

Regarding the Shemp situation, we all went oprano on his ass, but honestly that dude had no intention of sharing any real information with us about his business model - just like none of us really did when we were at the top of the food chain.

The food chain moves, and as with every industry but this one more than any, the most important thing is keeping up with changes and staying on top of moving technology. A lot of us made the mistake of thinking things should stay the same, because it worked for us.

And look at it this way ... why would anyone want to answer serious questions about their business to doubters, when he could be getting his ass kissed by morons who don't know any better?

I had 2 hobbies during that time. Forensic data recovery which starts at $300 an hour and then the adult web on the side. The BBS ended up morphing into a 5 letter domain name.

For me IT was a lot more profitable. Biggest mistake I ever made was having a hard time accepting people would pay for what several of us were extracting for shits and grins out of the newsgroups.

Homegrown BBS and Wild Rose Net were the big shits of the day making money on dialup and translating it to the web. As far as I know they have both kept on keeping on.

Thats a good question for LBBV. I know someone is in the data center 24/7.
You open a ticket they have fixed the problem and logged it before you can refresh the screen.

Oprano and FFC both are hosted with NatNet.

I do have monitoring on all of our servers from points across the U.S. and a couple on foreign soil as well. If something doesn't respond as expected, I get an alert, the monitors look at least once every 5 minutes.

I've yet to have anything we have hosted at Natnet fire a single alarm. And I would get one even if the response time was too slow. So not only has it been up, it's been up and moving fast.

I've seen Oprano hiccup a few times, but when I've looked as best I can from the outside looking in, it doesn't appear to be the network. It acts more like it's at the application level. I would speculate that there's more than one database application on the server and when Oprano is slow the database is getting thrashed pretty good.

This is NOT something I would fault Natnet or any other host for, application issues are the responsibility of the content provider.
