View Full Version : what makes one domain registrar better than the next?

I never understood this other than the fact stability is very important, so a company doesn't go under and you don't lose your domains. The other issue is price. I personally use Domain Name Systems just because I have been using them for a long time, they are reasonable priced, and I loved their expired domain email newsletters when they came.

Is there anything else other than price and stability. Any service factors I am overlooking and not taking into account that I should?

Being able to contact the owners and having them help you immediately :)

And stability means more than the company going under - it also shows how protected your domains are. I lost a handful over at DNS because they registered them under their name instead of mine when I moved them from NetSol, then didn't respond to my trouble tickets.

Now everything's at Directnic, has been for years and I'm as happy as a pig in shit :)

i could care less as long as I can get in and change nameservers, cause that is all I ever do with a domain registrar

Basically for me it's about three things for me:

1) Security -- pisses me off everytime i get transfer requests for my domains from no-name registrars with someone trying to snipe one.

2) Tools -- should be easy to manage the domains and make changes.

3) Support -- if something does get fucked up, i want it fixed quick.

Well, the people do. When chipmunk worked for moniker, they were by far the best, but since he is gone the service level has dropped and they are just the same as many others.

I wish an actual owner would give good service so staying with a certain registrar would be easier.

But so far.

Godaddy _ where I am jsut another number, but cam at least call andf get a live person to help and they do a good job

Or Monier -- who is starting to suck service wise now wihtout chipmiunk there. where my favorites so far and I have tried about a dozen so far .

DNS, is the worst registrar you could use
it doesnt get any worse in my opinion

DNS is not even a registrar, they're a reseller of enom and opensrs
at the very least try enom who are crooks in their own way, but at least have a very good backend for domains.

i have always liked directnic, even tho they are my most expensive registrar. Their bulk edit tools have always been very useful for me

If you would have read closely, Slav answered your questions about domain name service before you asked it:

If you cannot take the time to digest this answer, and figure it out for yourself, then you should stay with DNS.

Yeah, I have a lot of domains at Directnic and prefer their tools to anything out there. But I also have a lot at Godaddy now. I never advocate choosing registrars based on price point, but when it gets to the point where you can save 40% or so for much the same service, it makes good business sense to at least consider the move.

For security I only use Directnic...they did stay online thru a fucking hurricane!

If Im domain speculating...that is trying out a new project I have used buydomains in the past and most recently moniker. The 40% savings allows me to test some ideas for domain names that might be throwaways.

security
direct and timely access to personnel who can correct a challenge or answer questions
ease of use
Tools available and their functionality

I'm probably the wrong person to comment on this as I have only used 3 registrars in 9 years

Directnic is the reason I've only ever used 3 registrars, with them I'm totally satisfied

When I first started in this I was using register.com, got tired of paying the higher price but they did have some nice dns tools (which I still miss) and their 800 number often came in handy.

I slowly, as they came up for renewal, moved everything over to directnic because I know the owner :)

I have had no problems with directnic (although I want them to beef up their dns tools a touch... doesn't effect me too much anymore since I set up my own dns servers)

I have never tried the really low price registrars because I believe you often get what you pay for out there.

I been bery bery happy with directnic :okthumb:
