I've never trusted windows updates all that much, I usually like to wait until they've fixed the bugs that are usually in the update, before I update.

seriously, the virus that is going around can attack your computer THROUGH A JPEG IMAGE!!!

if you don't want to install anything else, find this particular security update in the list and install it

2 people on GFY have already had to format their machines because of this shit...all you have to do is open a jpeg image and you are gotten...i am NOT exaggerating

http://news.com.com/Antivirus+makers+catch+up+to+Windows+bug/2100-1002_3-6018696.html

The flaw lies in the way Windows renders Windows Meta File images. The bug was discovered last week and is being exploited in attacks that compromise a vulnerable PC if the user visits a Web site with a malicious image file.

Wow it must be important, it didn't require me to go get that thing to bypass the validity checker thing.

here ya go

According to iDefense, Windows users can disable the rendering of WMF files using the following hack:

1. Click on the Start button on the taskbar.
2. Click on Run...
3. Type "regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll" to disable.
4. Click ok when the change dialog appears.

iDefense notes that this workaround may interfere with certain thumbnail images loading correctly, though I have used the hack on my machine and haven't had any problems yet. The company notes that once Microsoft issues a patch, the WMF feature may be enabled again by entering the command "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" in step three above.

I installed it last week. MS was supposed to come out with the fix next week. I guess they fast tracked it. I hear it is a nasty problem.

haha, yeah, it is pretty serious

the virus installs with the meta info in a regular image, so I could just load an image on the web, tell you to check it out, and BAM

So, if you owned a pay site you wouldn't mind having your password spread all around on the trading sites, right?

I got my copy of XP Corporate by a person who used to work for Microsoft, he's also the one who built my computer. Frankly, when it comes right down to it at this point, I don't care.

Shit happens.
