It's kinda like the chick who started the "beg for money" website trend that was hot a couple of years back. She blatently asked for money to pay off her credit cards and people sent it in just because it was original. The copycats likely did next to nothing.

Same deal here more than likely.

In reality I'm guessing there are very few clicks to the sponsors. Not sure I see any real ROI potential for anyone other than the guy who started it.

Just once I'd like to have something of mine take off as one of these "fads". The net can truly rain traffic when you get people passing it around in email.
