With so much talk I have heard and seen here lately about how adult is dead, and webmasters suck , and all the BIG money is gone , etc...

I would like to know what you think and why?

I mean was it not just a few short years ago that adult started on the interent and less people use the internet than a mobile phone or portable device.

Mobile porn is coming , High Def is coming, more internet users are coming.

I mean the days of the quick scam and cheat are gone sure, but how can any one educated and knowledgable about how any industr or business works fell that a business that makes 14. 5 BILLION dollars a year and is in its infancy and technology is moving at leaps and bounds can be dead and over ?

So as the so called " BIG GUYS " leave the industry do you think you mised your chance with them and it is all down hill from here ? or do you fell like an immigrant in a new land , and see bountiful opportunity ahead of you with doors wide open ?

Joe, this is just a natural progression of things.
It happened in Auto Industry
(do you know that USA had originally over 100 car manufacturers!?)
It happened in computer industry
(where is Coleco, Fairchild, and hundreds of others?)
oil companies, and porn is not any different. Consolidation is taking place and if you check the phone sex history,
you'll know what's gonna happen with porn on the internet.

Interestingly enough, was just discussing this exact same thing with my wine loving neighbor :)

Peaches, those who study history can see the future. Meanwhile, have another good one for you to try:

2002, Willamete Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir
$16 at Costco. Good every day wine.

Will grab some! My wine loving neighbor just got us some 2002 Wolf Blass Gold Label Shiraz - very mild - $20 a bottle :)

good example Serge, as thee phjone sex money stil makes a good living for many, and the smart ones in it evolved to the internet .

or instead of counting on only phone sex the expanded their horizons
same with Porn magazines they are not what they once were but a big feather in the cap of a well rounded program .

I dont dwell on lost opportunities, but I do learn from my mistakes and try to never make the same one twice.

History definitely suggests that Serge is correct.

However, the internet is also one of those things like the invention of the printing press, radio or television which is having a very profound impact on how we live and the very dynamic of human social interaction. And one of the ways that it does this is that it empowers basically anyone to publish anything and have it immediately accessible by everyone. This removes a lot of the business boundaries that forced the aforementioned industries to consolidate.

The big boys will consolidate, we're seeing it already. However, there will always be the opportunity for the hobbyist or the mom and pop operator to make a buck. And there are no ceilings on the internet to keep any of them from hitting a home run and becoming a big fish.

True consolidation is a long time away. The Internet is still a very vast and open wilderness with lots of room for scams and low budget / low quality product.

Two points come to mind:

1) Low finance entry. This is the main reason for saturation. And with large webmasters actually fighting against opportunities to regulate, and no hard plan for law changes, it is sure to continue for a great while. For every large program that fails or consolidates, another 20 webmasters spring up with a tgp or new single-girl site.

2) Regulating the system is nearly impossible at this point. Even when the Gov attempts it, they are usually off-base strategically. They are, simply put, well behind the curve.

Mobile porn and High Def? They are coming IMO. People in this industry allow one week to pass and assume 20 business years have gone by. One economic portion of the adult industy is gone, that economic portion being misinformed consumers tangled up with an esoteric webmaster community; consumers are smarter (getting smarter), webmasters are more vast (getting vaster).

Just my thoughts on it.

Sooner or later, all media is delivered via IP (or whatever it evolves into) and every appliance interfaces with the net in some way. There are tons of applications and business opportunities yet to come. No worries there.

The low cost of entry is one of the root problems of our industry. However, is that truly the problem? I dont think so, I think that's symptomatic of the nature of the internet. Again, remember anyone can publish anything on the net, and they will.

Regulate all TGP's out of existence, get all sponsors to quit giving away free content. And guess what? There'll still be shitloads of free porn on the net. You cant stop that.

The problem with adult is the core underlying business model hasn't evolved much at all since 1998 or so.

At this point I'm going to say a little bit of both, obviously if one viewed the exit of the "Big boys" as indication of an industry being a "lost opportunity" they wouldn't dwell on it (at least I should hope not).

New horizons shouldn't be forgotten in the meantime however, there are ALWAYS new horizons.

$1000 / domain. Problem solved.

Make people take a plan serious. Would we open a bar on a whim with a 100k liquor license needing paid?

Baby with the bath water.

If you charge $1000 per domain you really hurt the entire internet. In fact, pornographers are likely one of the few breeds of smalltime internet publishers who would pay that size fee.

You could try to force porn into .XXX, but I think most of us realize that wont work.

There was a time wher eI did dwell alot on missed opertunities, or being a few days late on something, but then I realized it was counter productive, now I tend to try and be a few steps ahead as much as possible, and I always try and keep my mind open for new ideas, and concepts.

You can't turn back time, so what you've lost in the past is just that, the past.

Is adult dead? Hell no. Is the ability to make mega-money as a new entrant possible? Doubtful. Is the ability to make mega-money with something new possible? Yes, but only from deep-pocketed established companies with a vision.

On another line of thinking, ancillary companies can always make money. In fact, there are historical instances where they have done the best of anyone.

What one company made the most money out of the famous California Gold Rush? And are the only one company still around and going strong 150 years later?

Someone who found a gold vein? Nope someone who supplied miners.

Levi's Jeans.

No, I don't think .xxx works, however, maybe some middle ground, bus lic fees? Something to raise the entry level.

I think one day people will regret percieving the net as a "free, liberated portal."

thankfully we have something in common with the christians and bush - they dont want XXX either since it gives recognition to the adult industry as a viable business. its going to be a dead issue

Anything you do to regulate will only impact those who are legitimate to allow themselves to be regulated. These guys aren't the problem to begin with, but they are the ones who feel the pain.

The solutions and opportunities must rise from innovation, not regulation.
