December '05 one of the coldest ever

This month is going down as one of the coldest Decembers in Milwaukee history, according to the National Weather Service.

For the first 18 days of December, the average temperature in Milwaukee was 19 degrees. That's the seventh lowest average temperature for that time period since 1942 and the first time in 20 years that the average has been that low, the weather service said. And those averages don't include today, when the low temperature in Milwaukee was 1 degree. Last year, the average temperature for the first 18 days of December was 32.8 degrees.

Including today, there have been 12 days in December in which the low temperature was 15 degrees or lower, and only three days when the high was 30 degrees or higher. By comparison, from Dec. 1 to 19, 2004, there were just three days in which the low was 15 or lower and 17 days in which the high temperature reached 30 degrees or more.

You can check out some other temperatures around the state on the National Weather Service's Web site.

I realize that what is considered "cold" isn't very impressive here compared to what you guys are facing, but we've actually turned the heat in the living room on four times so far. There have been many, many years when we haven't turned it on at all. (We have electric heat in the cement flooring of the living room and that's it for this Southern California adobe-from-hell dwelling.)

The weather has become the intro to an apocalyptic B-movie.

It was one of the hottest, most humid summers. And now it's turning into one of the coldest and wettest winters!!!

Grrrr. I'm so thinking of moving to a place without seasons.
