Bank hero gets calculator
A brave teenager who saved a bank thousands of pounds by foiling a cash machine scam was rewarded yesterday — with a plastic calculator.
Luke Bridges, 17, tore a false fascia off an ATM machine then fled from crooks waiting nearby who had put it there.
He ran home with the device — used to “skim” customers’ PIN codes and clone cards — and called police.
NatWest, owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland — which is worth £54.9 Billion — said they would reward the teenager for his bravery.
But when he opened a parcel from the bank he found a plastic calculator worth a few Pounds.
Rest of story here: http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005580123,00.html (http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005580123,00.html)
This certainly goes a long way to dispel the stereotype of Scots being cheap, doesn't it? http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/blink.gif

Well, his parents probably sat him down and explained how proud they were and how you "do right for right's sake alone" but geesh...a plastic calculator? The bank could have gotten off cheaper and better by printing out a "hero award" certificate and having a ceremony.
Cheap is one thing. Low class cheap is quite another.

Great post...
I couldn't help but think when I read that, how it will probably be him putting the device onto the machine later on down the road...

You're absolutely right. One should do the right thing just because it's the right thing to do, but the bank could have been a little more generous.
That's just lame.

That's just lame. It's cheap. It's greedy. And it sends a signal out to future would-be Samaritans to just let the fucking bank get the fuck ripped off. :hmm: Karma!!!

Damn... They would of been better of not getting the poor guys hopes up at all ... Hopefully, for the bank's sake, he didn't reverse engineer it before he turned it in hehe..
Dravyk, You've been watching Earl on T.V. too much

Just a small point, hardly worth bothering about really & it certainly shouldn't get in the way of The Sun's investigative journalism.
The ATM gangs that put these false fronts on tend to be pretty nasty, well-organised gangs, who don't take kindly to their property being 'ripped off' (hohoho).
The banks all advise "if you see anything report it to XYZ" because theses people can be violent buggers.
So, what ya gonna do? Pay a large reward to encourage people to put themselves in danger? Or pay a titchy one that makes people think twice?
Wonder what the story would be if the kid got killed because banks dished out £10k / £20k reward etc?
A good Scrooge story is too much to pass up at this time of year.

You're buggin', Jeremy. :hmm:
These rational, logical, "other side of the story" posts of yours have got to stop before you have us all sitting and seeing both sides of an issue.
(I like teasing Jeremy. He's hot. :yowsa: )
He's also right, of course. I got caught up in the "reward for good deed doin'" aspect and didn't think about the kid and his family dead on the floor because this gang got even. I should have. Nowadays, doing a good deed can in fact get you killed.

Perhaps he can use it to calculate his chances of survival when the Albanian mafia catch up with him.
