My roomate was surfing PORN even after I told him not to and that if he wanted something to let me know and I would get it. But Noooooooooooo, he had to wander off into the abyss without a fucking clue. What happens, I come home from work this morning and see that my computer is shut down, start it up and bam, my wallpaper has been changed to black and red letters that say,

Warning!
Spyware detected on your computer!

Install an antivirus or spyware remover
to clean your computer.

Now I have that dreaded and difficult to remove Home Search Assistant and other shit on my computer and I cannot get rid of it.

Anyone know of anything other than Formatting my harddrive? I cannot even stay on the net long enough to upload my files to my server.

I'm not sure what op you're on but if it's XP then try the F8 key on boot trick, see if you can to a restore back to before the fuckwit surfed on your machine.

If you manage to do a restore and the problem is still there then you're going to have to get your hands very (tech) dirty. :(

Not sure what to say. If you can't stay on the Net long enough to upload a file, you won't be able to download antispyware either. That's the biggie. http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/sad.gif

Either you're going to need to purchase some spyremoval ware from an actual computer store .... or find a free AOL signup disk, install, get a free account, use their antispyware, cancel the account. Then go get some real good stuff to finish the job when you're more stablized.

That's the only things I can think to suggest.

I have NEVER had a problem with viruses, spyware etc. I just know where to stay away from so I never needed spyware removal tools or even an anti virus for that matter.

I'm flipping out too over it. It just pisses me off when someone else fucks up your machine and I have tried numerous times to remove this from other peoples machines but you have to be more techy than I am.

Anyways, Nick, my machine is on, send away my friend.

Install FireFox/Opera/Whatever else, if you dont already have one installed, then use that instead - so the IE pops wont mess with shit.

Then if the above (recommended) anti-adware products dont help, download this:

Usually, when you find .exe's in HiJackThis that you have no idea what it is, you can search google for the file. 99.9% of the time, you'll find the file, and it'll either say safe, or adware.

I'd give Xoft a try too, it picked up & removed things from my machine that Adaware & Spybot had missed and/or couldn't remove.

you can download AVG free antivirus (http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_371a669.exe) and the free antispyware (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=321CD7A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en) from Microsoft. Both auto-update and auto-scan. I always install both of those on my friends and families computers.

Oh yeah, don't forget to smack your friend for not listening to you. :)

Thought of something else, VDM.

(Yeah I know part of this Trev suggested already, just going one step beyond that.)

Turn off your restore function in Control Panel, reboot your computer but go into SAFE MODE, THEN run all the antispyware stuff, then reboot normally, then it should be safe to put your restore function back on.

Three reboots, I know and a royal pain in the ass, but sometimes it takes those kind of steps to rid one of this stuff. It's insidious. http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/dry.gif

Hmmm...VDM, once you get it all back up and working. Create a user account for yourself with full privileges and then create a "guest" user account for him with no write privileges.

If you run hijack this and then submit the log file that it creates to this web page, it creates a report telling you which items you need to remove. I've usd it myself in the past and found it very useful to help get rid of the various bits and pieces of shit that spyware adds to your registry.

Be sure to read the instructions on the site throroughly though and I'd recommend checking out anything that you intend to delete - if you delete the wrong things from your registry you will be fucked with a capital F.

voodooman next time just create a temp user for your room mate to log on too. and do not give him any admin rights that should help (*not elimitate the problem but at least help)

and everytime he asks for permission to install something smack him with your dick.

Im SOL without even a stick now.

I downloaded so many fucking programs to try to get one to work
and ended up one of the proggies deleted my explorer.exe file, now my
machine wont boot at all.

I just gave up. Fuck computers and the fucking people that create viruses
