Alarm over dramatic weakening of Gulf Stream

· Slowing of current by a third in 12 years could bring more extreme weather
· Temperatures in Britain likely to drop by one degree in next decade

The powerful ocean current that bathes Britain and northern Europe in warm waters from the tropics has weakened dramatically in recent years, a consequence of global warming that could trigger more severe winters and cooler summers across the region, scientists warn today.
Researchers on a scientific expedition in the Atlantic Ocean measured the strength of the current between Africa and the east coast of America and found that the circulation has slowed by 30% since a previous expedition 12 years ago.

The current, which drives the Gulf Stream, delivers the equivalent of 1m power stations-worth of energy to northern Europe, propping up temperatures by 10C in some regions. The researchers found that the circulation has weakened by 6m tonnes of water a second. Previous expeditions to check the current flow in 1957, 1981 and 1992 found only minor changes in its strength, although a slowing was picked up in a further expedition in 1998. The decline prompted the scientists to set up a £4.8m network of moored instruments in the Atlantic to monitor changes in the current continuously.

or do you think it's all junk science and it's just a matter of cycles within the earth???

or do you think it's all junk science and it's just a matter of cycles within the earth??? First: What is "junk science" exactly?

Second: Why either/or? Both is also a very real possibility.

1st- Junk science is science that basically looks for the result it desires regardless of facts.

2nd- because most people look at it as an either/or proposition. Also, if it is nohting more thana normal cycle there really isn't much you can do about it anyways.

This is not the first time....year 2000 is the demarc point....6500 years from now we should be wiped out, all the Ice caps will melt and start the cooling process all over again. It will rain till everything is ice. Then after about 13,000 years the ice will start to melt, and after 19,500 The greek and jewish survivors will fight to say they maintained our Data Base so we know how to start all over again.

Where's the "I don't give a fuck" option? It's right next to the "When I can walk across the ice to France" option.

It's right next to the "When I can walk across the ice to France" option.
That may one day become an option but I'm sure the rest of the World will have fucked the French by then... so a walk over to France might be nice :)

I'll look it up. Is it a non-fiction book or something in fiction that tries to blend real life stuff in it?

The guy is definately a talented writer. :) He also wrote The Hot Zone if memory serves me correctly and super viruses and the like scare me more than a terrorists does any day of the week.

Since 02/16/2005, the Kyoto Protocol has cost about US$ 118,874,796,727

and reduced the temperature in 2050 roughly by 0.001232776 °C .

Every day, we buy -0.000005 Celsius degrees for one half of the LHC collider. JunkScience.

I support Global Warming 100%!! Anything that will bring an end to our tourist season can't be a bad thing. Tourists Stay Home!!!

Accordingly, my investment portfolio is aligned and targeted to this prospect. It is currently long on Bikinis, thongs and Sun Tan Lotion and short parkas, boots and common sense. :)
