SAGUENAY, Quebec (AP) -- A 15-year-old girl with a peanut allergy died after kissing her boyfriend, who had just eaten a peanut butter snack, hospital officials said Monday.

Christina Desforges died in a Quebec hospital Wednesday after doctors were unable to treat her allergic reaction to the kiss the previous weekend.

Desforges, who lived in Saguenay, about 155 miles north of Quebec City, was almost immediately given a shot of Adrenaline, a standard tool for treating the anaphylactic shock brought on by a peanut allergy, officials said.

An autopsy was being performed. Dr. Nina Verreault, an allergist at the Chicoutimi Hospital in Saguenay, declined to comment on the case.

The symptoms of peanut allergy can include hives, plunging blood pressure and swelling of the face and throat, which can block breathing.

Peanut allergies have been rising in recent decades. The reason remains unclear, but one study found that baby creams or lotions with peanut oil may cause children to develop allergies later in life.

About 1.5 million Americans are severely allergic to even the smallest trace of peanuts and peanut allergies account for 50 to 100 deaths in the United States each year. Canadian figures were not immediately available.

OMG i'm going to rot in hell, but I had to laugh.
That's terrible, truly terrible, ...but funny.

But its not, because that poor guy will get teased for the rest of his life about having the "kiss of death" and because it was in this case true, it won't be funny at all, but I can't help laugh...

I really am going to rot in that hell I don't believe in.

It's absoultely amazing that such trace amounts of anything edible can actually lead to death. Just very bizarre. http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/blink.gif

Peanut allergies are actually one of the worst allergies one can have. I knew somebody once who began to swell up with hives when she picked up her daughters from the lady that watched them while she was at work. The lady had made cookies with the girls...peanut butter cookies. Just being touched, after handwashing, etc., was enough to send this woman to the ER. That was the first time I realized one could be *that* allergic to a food product.

Once the airway swells shut, it's pretty much game over.

She's dead and her boyfriend just lost all chance of turning out normally. I wonder how many fights he's been in at high school already?

Appreciating the morbid humor of it is pretty normal, though. There's just nowhere else to go with a story like this.

The rate of childhood peanut allergy seems to have tripled between 1989 and 2002...thus leaving school in the late 70s...of course I never knew anyone.

Interesting..so we are breeding "weaker" people?

Kids can't even take a damned peanut butter sandwich to school anymore. These allergies are out of control and something is very very bone-whacked about the whole thing.

As a kid I couldn't imagine not having my pb & j at least a couple times a week in the school lunch.

At my daughters school they can't wear perfume , cologne , deodorant etc..

In fact a parent visiting cannot wear any and enter the school through someone being allergic to it.

I think the sufferer should just be forced to go to school in a bubble so the other 400 can do what they like.

Here in Philly, (make that, New York, Baltimore, Chicago, hell, the west, and red neck country too ... most places here other than California in fact) they'd call them pussies. I'd love to see someone say "you can't wear deordant because my child is sensative to it!" ... If they didn't get a "fuck you lady" in the least, they'd probably dunk her in something nasty and send her home half-drowned. What a bunch of weakling nancys.

I agree, put them in a bubble and go roll them off a cliff or something.

We do seem to be raising a society of individuals that are shot to hell, health-wise.

I remember having to go through the hell of interviewing the teacher before brining in the traditional cookies/cupcakes/whatever to celebrate the kid's birthdays. "Anyone allergic to chocolate? Nuts? Anything?"

Bring in boxes of raisins, indeed. :hmm:

Right out here in redneck country it works more classroom to classroom than it does for entire schools - but it does happen. It does tend to piss off the immature students and the uneducated class of parents.

There are those who get their panties in a knot about it when Little Missy has to actually bathe instead of wear perfume, or Junior can't prove how much money he can waste by dousing himself in the scent du jour - but they are usually the same ones who object to laws prohibiting marriages between immdiate family members.

I personally am not opposed to rolling someone off a cliff - but it wouldn't be the unfortunate one with the allergies.

Weakling nancies?

Yo, Fonz, do that thing with the juke box, wouldja?

Ok, PD. What are these people supposed to do when they enter the real world????

Should we stop selling peanut butter and perfume and every other thing that might possibly bother someone somewhere? How about special lanes in the pavement of midtowns with plastic dividers so those who are allergic to fuck-everything won't mingle with the "normals" who heaven-sakes might wear a dab of perfume or something?

Get real!!

This isn't getting anyone ready for the real world -- it's doing the exact opposite!! ... catering, pandering, deluding and putting off the inevitable. This is already making nothing but true psychological bubbles in the schools. Bubbles which WILL burst one day and then what happens to them then???

Seriously, provide an answer. I'd really love to know. Tell me how this is the right thing for them, for anybody ... and tell me where along this insane line does it stop at? How far does it go?

I read somewhere recently (probably in relation to this story, which was reported here too) that the rise in peanut allergies may be related to an increase in the use of baby lotions, oils, etc, based on peanut oil. Apparently the early exposure can trigger an allergic reaction.

Oh, so you've gone from pushing them off cliffs to preparing them for the real world.

That's good - I was scared to find out what you might want to do to people who have physical challenges. Are the fucking gimps as inconvenient as the weakling nancies?

I don't recall saying anything about not selling perfume or peanut butter, or saying anything that could be remotely construed as suggesting same by anyone not off on some kind of emotional tangent (most likely "I'm getting old/cranky old man" syndrome - you know, the one that starts out "These kids today are pussies...")

Do I think that some places (schools, employers, government offices) go too far? Yes.

Do I think that for every child out there who actually suffers from an allergy, there are nine (or nineteen) malingering parents hovering in the background? Undoubtedly.

By the time kids get out of school they have undoubtedly developed a number of coping skills that will facilitate their entry into the real world. Making some accomodations for them while they are undergoing that process is nothing more than an inconvenience for others.

Dravyk
11-29-2005, 07:59 PM
Not having anyone in school even visiting wear perfume or cologne is an accomodation?

And then what? One day they go on the bus and freak out because they can't get used to it? What happens when they go to the Mall, as all kids do. Is the perfume squirting hordes going to know this kid has been kept in a social bottle and not to approach? No, this crap is way too far.

I remember the psychological discussions of "what about when my kid wants to touch the burner, I don't want him to get hurt" scenario that's brought up now and then. And they pretty much say, you have a choice, if you keep not letting the child learn now, they will learn it later, and the burn will be bigger, and they might not be around to receive treatment.

Guess what? Life is unfair. They shouldn't have 16 years or whatever of being sheltered from that, they will come out babbling lunatics. I totally disagree they will "learn" something by never having experienced it. Your point makes no sense there.

And as to my remark about pushing off a cliff was ... it what it was: An extreme opposite of this cuddling bubble shit; as extreme in it's "equal and opposite" nature to the bullshit I was hearing. :)

There may come a day when this allergy thing gets so far out of hand that kids with those special requirements have to attend a separate school that caters to their needs.

I'm not saying that's the best solution, but it may be the only workable one in future.

I would hazard a guess that most of us "over 35'ers" had NONE of the restrictions and rules in our grade schools, I know I didn't. If some kid was allergic to something it was up to them to look after it, not everone else. Nowadays it is just too big, too widespread, and too serious a problem to just say "tough shit" to them. The example of the girl dying from the kiss of death would seem to support that.

Dravyk

Fuck cancer. We apparently need a cure for "peanut butter" now. http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/sad.gif

... Maybe Scott Baio can host a telethon!!! :hmm:

And yeah, I know I'm coming off like a bastard. But my gripe isn't with the kids or the victims. It's two-folld. First, how society is handling things, as well as just where this weird new shit is coming from that everyone's turning into a community of bubble children. It all just pisses me off.

I'd really like people who think that an allergy to colognes and perfumes requires toughness to try an experiment.

Lie down on the floor on your back, and have someone who weighs about 200 pounds sit on your chest. Now, breathe deep.

How tough are you?

A couple of hundred kids a year die in the U.S. due to food allergies. Peanut butter is one of the leading causes.

Interestingly enough, there was a case (in the UK, I think) where a nanny agreed with Dravyk, and thought that the mommy was babying the child and the kid was just a pussy, so she fed the kid peanut butter.

She was aquitted of murder charges.

Just pronounce the syllables one by one, keep a dictionary near you and take a look at the pretty pictures and maybe you'll get it. Oh, I so don't want to play sometimes, but I generally end up doing it anyway. :( (This is turning out to be a much longer post than even I intended it to be, so feel free to skip over it.)

The fucking gimps have laws now, and yes, the fucking gimps develop coping skills. Such as announcing at top volume "OH. I'M SORRY. DOES MY BEING IN A FUCKING WHEELCHAIR ANNOY YOU? WANNA SWAP FOR THE DAY, ASSHOLE?"
Perhaps not the most socially correct coping skill I could have developed, but I'm fond of it. So is my husband. And so, I've discovered happily, are the passersby who froze in awkwardness until given permission by the gimp to make a scene and pass ugly looks and words toward the source of the discontent. (Nice people totally freak out. They want to express their anger but don't want to embarrass the gimp...until the gimp displays a refusal to be embarrassed. Then...we have a nice riot and all have a good time.)

I have an allergy to fragrances. One of my daughters very much wanted a fragrance called "Vanilla Fields" when it first came out. I bought it for her for Christmas. She came happily out with it on...and I had a seizure. Oops. She volunteered to throw it out, but I said no. (Fucking expensive, it was.) So, she put it on outside on the way to the car when her father drove her to school. By the time she came home again, the smell had worn off. She happily used up the bottle because we have coping skills.

A friend and I, who also has allergies, were out shopping together and we both had to be rescued from the cleaning supply aisle. She looked at me and said "are your eyes watering and is it hard to breathe?" I managed to nod. A nice sales clerk did the Lewis and Clark and got us out of there. (We *never* would have entered a candle store or a soap store, but this was rather a surprise.)

People with allergies develop coping skills. I won't ever go into a field of lily of the valley to pick boquets for a friend's aunt's tea part after my eyes swelled shut and I had to be rescued when I was 14.

I discovered a contact allergy to roses at my sister's wedding. Her thoughtful gift of a rose wrist corsage, to proudly mark me as "sister of the bride," made my hand swell up to twice its normal size, turn purple and lose all feeling. That one's really simple: don't wear rose wrist corsages. Nobody who knows me well enough to send me flowers would send me roses, anyway, except for the yellow ones my husband gives me, which don't bother me in the least in a vase.

My dumb ass husband (you'd really think a man that age would have KNOWN he was allergic to tetnus shots!!!) won't ever have another tetnus shot. He also won't be allowed to muck out the stable, should their ever be a stable in our future. He'll also never go anywhere near a rusty pipe without wearing gloves, which is what got him in the tetnus shot trouble decades ago.

And sadly, people with allergies as severe as this poor dead girl had, have to tell everyone in their life about it to prevent what happened to her from happening to them. Is it embarrassing to admit you can't eat/touch/do the simplest things that other people can do every day? Sure it is. Not as embarrassing as the multitude of creepy things your body does when you die, though.

I was once in the emergency room next to a woman who'd had an allergy attack at a restaurant. This woman was allergic to *everything.* Her husband was incredibly well informed, though. I listened to him list off her allergies to the doctor. I offered my kudos through the curtain to them both. Coping skills. And most likely a lawsuit for the restaurant, because the husband had asked for the entire ingredients list of what the lady had ordered before she ordered it, and nothing on her forbidden list was mentioned. So, she either encountered something new or the restaurant left something out. If you have to share a curtained cubicle in an emergency room, it's always nice to share with bright, funny people with great coping skills.

On natural selection: yes, we don't have as many people dying off as we used to due to the leaps forward in medical care. They live long lives, and they breed. In the past, they simply would have died.

Didn't a King of England die from a broken jaw in ages past?
