View Full Version : Would you leave your friends for wealth?

I remember reading a book where author recommends not associating much with firends who aren't persuing wealth like he says you should.

I want to know how you think about this idea.

In a heartbeat.....

With money, I can buy all the friends I want :yowsa:

(j/k Friends will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no friends)

Why would you want loser friends?

I'd like to take the question apart.

firends who aren't persuing wealth

I have no idea what that means, unless it means work-a-holic, possibly ethically questionable money grubbing bastards with no real clue as to what's important in life.

he says you should

Ah. Like the "author" says YOU should. Not "how YOU think you should be living your life." How HE thinks you should be living your life.

I can't remember the last time I took somebody's "opinion" on how I "should" be leading my life or chosing my friends. My Dad pretty much gave up on that when I was 14. He took the "I gave you some guidelines, now take the ball and run with it" approach. I've always blessed him for that.

I'm not about to give power over my friend selection to some idiot who wrote a book that I didn't give my father.

People who think money is the be-all-and-end-all of life should spend a week with a really good physical handicap. They learn they need enough money for medical insurance and a good wheelchair. What the hell good is an expensive sports car when you can't drive it, and even if someone else drives it, the wheelchair won't fit? What good is a big mansion if you can't climb stairs? What good is having your spouse work themselves to death trying for that magic amount of money if what you end up with is an insurance policy...alone?

I'd love to be rich. Don't misunderstand. But give up my friends? Why the hell would that even be necessary?

Not only no, but hell, no.

All that is doing is blaming someone else for your own shortcomings. :)

Not only no, but hell, no.

Exactly.

If you desert yr friends cause they are poor , they weren't your friends , because you have no knowledge of what friendship is.

I tend to keep the circle of close friends small, and this discussion never ever arises, as I refuse to mingle amongst muppets in real life.

What can be truly amusing, in a vengence is mine sort of way, is when people who no longer had time or use for you suddenly are interested in renewing the "friendship" as they make their way back down or their perception of your position changes.

Absolutely not. My finances have been very high and very low at different times in my life and good friends didn't stop being my friends during the bad times. I certainly wouldn't do it.

I can count my total number of friends on one hand. It's a small group for a specific reason. :)

Like, you know, when your mom used to tie the pork chop around your neck to get the dog to play with you.

Thank you, crumpet. :inlove:

Not that it's anyone's business, Trev is "crumpet" and gets the love icons for conversations that occured in icq, not on the board. You guys get to watch the flirting. You don't get the other stuff.

Same with my cupcake. :inlove:

Don't worry, Dravyk. I have enough to go around. Let's dance, and the hell with most of 'em.

I would be happy if I had any friends, and NO I wouldnt trade a friend
no matter how much money I had/have/don't have.

Being a cop, you don't exactly make friends easily.

I briefly had a son-in-law who was a cop. My eldest informed me that her fiance had asked her "your mother doesn't mind that I'm a cop?" I rather boggled at the question. Do I mind that my daughter is hanging with a guy who has a gun and the authority to use it to protect her? Uh...NO. But he was actually worried. Now he's an ex-son-in-law, but still a cop. He's also around and they stayed more or less friendly, depending on the day, the phase of the moon, or whatever.
