Bar's banner brings obscenity citation

CHEYENNE -- Life, sometimes, can be a real (rhymes with witch).

Lois Tobin found that out when she was cited for disorderly conduct because the banner hanging outside her Lingle tavern reads, "The Bitch's Corner Bar."

Specifically, Tobin was charged on Wednesday with violating the small eastern Wyoming town's obscenity ordinance, which states that a person is guilty of disorderly conduct "if, with intent to cause public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, or carelessly creating a risk thereof, he or she ... utters profane or obscene language in any public street or other public place, or place to which the public is invited."

Tobin faces a fine up to $200. Her initial appearance is Dec. 15 in Lingle Municipal Court.

Her attorney, Jerry Smith, said she will plead not guilty.

"There's no basis for it whatsoever," he said. "'Bitch' is not a profane or obscene word so far as I can determine."

Doesn't Wyoming hit the high numbers as far as divorce and spousal abuse go? I think I read that somewhere. Not to mention a regrettable tendency to dislike those they consider "different."

I do believe that the bar owner is correct, though. It will be difficult to prove an obscenity charge with a word that has an actual definition. A "bitch" is a female dog and countless dog breeders use it conversationally every day. All she has to do is slap up a graphic of a dog on that sign...then she may switch animals and flip the town the bird.

My new little dog is a bitch. She's an itty-bitty California bitch, though. Thankfully, she's safe from the easily offended who might slap her with a fine.

Sykkboy...is Wyoming actually as gorgeous as it looks in the pictures I've seen? That state used to be on my "would love to live there list." (It got taken off due to a few unfortunate news articles.)

Pictures could never do the state justice, especially if you get up in the Sinks Canyon or Wind River Basin area.

As for the spousal abuse stats, I'm not sure. There is a heavy redneck population, but not in the southern redneck vernacular. Basically, a whole shitload of cowboys in pickup trucks (held together with baling twine and duct tape).

The tolerance levels vary from town to town.
