invention for the internet to affect us as a whole?
Me, I am biased, I am known for my console work back in 99/2000. So I would say consoles, exit, enter, whatever. I also give due respect to the man who gave it to us, Timon.
There are other things as well that come up close, ie. billing, hosting, etc.
What do you bitches think?

I'd have to agree with you on the console... it instantly added more to everyone's bottom line and changed the way people looked at a surfer.

Bastards. I'm really trying to get feedback here. Don't make me start a fucked up thread to compete with this one.

Not an invention , but a discovery...
For me it was realising in 1996/7 that you could get a listing on a link list that was only frequented by credit cards holders.
It was the best feeling EVER seeing it work.
Building thousands of AVS sites a month watching them get like 100 hits a month each , solely from the various AVS sites link lists , and getting a upsale per site per month.
It was awesome.Went from scraping by on the net , to a millions in a matter of months. :)
No feeling like it....
Well until we discovered cloaking, dynamic , etc in 98ish for the Search engines. :)
The AVS trick I discovered , the SE shit ...ummm...we ...ummm.. "acquired" the basics :)

This is what I'm talking about people. I already knew this about Nick, since he was my mentor and I was around for a good part of it, but how about everyone else?

ahahahahahahaha Loved free hosting!!!! LOL
"This site has been removed for mail abuse , let us refresh you to..."
:)
And loads of "water" for the High Society Soup :)
On that , Worst thing was realising I'd had a drink with Robin Nixon in his suite in 2000 I believe just before he sold his freehosts for waaay less than I would pay. :)
I also have the letter from someone to my solicitor rejecting my offer for another freehost group , succinctly. :)
I plan on having it framed. :)

I'd say it's different things for different people. :)
Grimm, Mayor ... freehosting.
FM ... click program.
Timon, Spanker, Robin, everyone on AWI ... consoles.
I'd even bet the enthusiastic VOIP users would pick that. And people who live far off and do lot of international stuff would say Skype.
For networking and such ... boards, ICQ.
Overall, to pick one, I'll have to go with Timon's "click programs" answer -- though I'd up that to "affiliate programs" in general ... cause if there weren't money in this, none of us would be here doing this.

I got a shitload of traffic from Robin's console.ABCweb :)
And a decent wedge of $$$ and a lot of traffic from Timon's Einstein Console .
That was when "ilynx" actually had tons of traffic lol

I was with Virtual Dreams in 95 when we were taking checks through the mail....then progressed to having people email us their creidt cards and have someone enter the info into a card machine, then email back the password.
IMHO.... NONE of us would really be making a living without online credit card transactions.
Payment gateway software was the most important thing to this industry..
