All the Gumby cartoons were made in the late 60s, and I remember watching them when I was from 4 to 6 years old.

Anyway I noticed them being played occasionally on a pay channel on my grid so I DVR'd some of them. It's amazing how interested my son is in them, considering he's also exposed to the most tech advanced cartoons and kid shows as well. He loves Gumby, Pokey, and Nopey. :)

Gumby was the best.
Actually Chris he was born in 1955. He was originally a segment on the Howdy Doody show.

Damn I feel really old knowing that.

Damn I feel really old knowing that.oh ok that makes sense. I was just going by the date shown on most of the ones I've seen lately (1967).

Another thing... yesterday on ebay I ran across an auction for a complete Billy Blastoff set of toys. The same stuff I played with when I was 5. Of course it's all collector's items now, and quite expensive for anything in mint or near mint condition.

I remember the Davey and Goliath kinda claymation thing.

Wasn't there a lot of religious undertones to that one?

I don't remember Davy & Goliath ... but my "cartoon" years were from ... uh ... my cartoon years ended ... errrr ... shortly before the time Chris started watching 'em.

Ah...memories.
I remember Gumby and Pokey.
I remember Davey and Goliath.
I remember Beanie and Cecil.

Davey and Goliath had a strong "moral" plotline. It never struck me as religious when I was young, more of a "right and wrong" kind of thing.

Yeah Davy and Goliath was sponsored by or created by some "group". Methodists or someone. But as Morgan said, it was ethics undertoned not religious in nature.

Funny thing (ok, three people in this thread may not think it funny), I never saw Beanie and Cecil. Seems that's the dividing line between the three shows mentioned that shows people are even older than me. :p

Trev, that's how "we" feel when you Brits talk about some shows and comedians ... It's like "WTF"?

I understand that, but these shows are 40 - 50 years old... if they were brit shows then you 'mericans would have had them in your face by at least 20 - 25 years. :D

You never know though. We ended up getting "Chef!" here on PBS, but I've heard Lenny Henry has had at least three more programmes (notice the spelling) since then.

We're not that much older than you Drav.
I remember a lot of local kids shows in NY and then in Philly. Most memorable were Soupy Sales and Wonderama in NY, Gene London and Pixanne in Philly.

Gumby lived in Enumclaw ??

BTW I remember them all, but my fondest childhood program memory was
being able to go down to see a couple of live Mr. Roger's Neighborhood
tapings, since that was taped out of the PBS studios in Pittsburgh...

Cool reading... I'm trying to remember what other shows I watched as a kid.

Of course Sesame Street. I think it had just started as a new show.
I watched Commander Tom and Rocketship 7. Featured "Promo the robot" :) It was out of Buffalo New York.
But my favourite was The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. (http://www.frightenstein.com)

I think I was a deprived child. I have never seen this Gumby show.

I loved Sesame Street and Mr. Dressup.

Sesame Street used to have these odd little Martians/aliens that I thought were funny as hell when I was stoned.

I can remember watching the Mickey Mouse club on television. I can remember watching both the Flintstones and the Jetsons as prime-time shows. I was never that much into cartoons; on Saturdays I watched as many old half-hour show repeats like Roy Rogers, My Friend Flicka, Sky King, and Rin-Tin-Tin as I did animated stuff.

Gumby

http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/b/bf/Gumby4.jpg
Gumby is a green clay humanoid figure who was the subject of a series of television shows totaling 223 episodes over a three-and-a-half decade period, animated using stop motion photography, known as claymation. The shows also featured Pokey, an orange clay horse, and Gumby's nemeses, the Block-heads.

I sometimes watched this bec. my siblings like more to watch Sesame Street...

Soupy Sales was my hero ... I always wanted Black Fang to get ahold of that wimpy Lambchops.

I had a crush on Shari Lewis, though ...

In St. Louis it was Corky the Clown (a local weatherman and the father of a friend of mine) playing LooneyTunes, Cookie and the Captain (playing Popeye), and (my favorite) Captain 11 playing the Three Stooges.

I always liked the Hanna-Barbera stuff the best (Magilla Gorilla, Huckleberry Hound, Quick-Draw Magraw). My absolute favorite cartoon was Rocky & Bullwinkle, however.

I had a crush on Shari Lewis, though ...That whiny voice talking to a sock?

The thought of her doing it in bed would be like an SNL skit. :yowsa:

I hate to tell you how old I was when my husband (that should give you a clue) hit me with "why did you think he was called 'Huckleberry Hound'??"

"Alliteration?" wasn't the right answer.

OK, OK, huckleberries are blue. I know that now.

Evil Chris
10-24-2005, 10:24 AM
so are blueberries... but it just doesn't sound the same does it? :)

MorganGrayson

Chris...I actually rolled "Blueberry Hound" around in my head a few times, and no, it just wasn't the same. :)
