Amongst the offerings: a browser toolbar, an integrated desktop search, webmail service Gmail, image editor Picasa, internet telephony Google Talk, an online RSS Reader, Blogger, News, price comparison service Froogle, Maps, satellite images, automated alerts, online translation, and specialised search services for images, video, local information and more.

An online payment system is in the works, and a recently announced alliance with Sun Microsystems could get Google into the market for free office software.

An online payment system would be nice.

During the first nine months of the year, Google earned a cool $1.5bn (£845m) before taxes.

That's not a figure to be sniffed at. :wnw:

I'll tell you now, Microsoft are totally terrified by Google, and with good reason in my opinion. Don't forget the possibility of the Google browser which, as was once pointed out about Netscape and then about Java (but never transpired), could develop into more of an operating system to compete with Windows (might actually happen this time knowing what Page and Brin have shown themselves capable of so far).

Actually I *like* MS and it's software, but I'm bored with their lack of innovation, so I'm looking forward to some exciting times ahead...

I'm an MS lover but if/when google develop a browser I'll try it out straight away, because no matter what pies google have stuck their fingers in to they've always kept it simple and done it right from the get go.

A Google OS ... Would be awesome!

And to be honest, with their team they have in place I wouldn't doubt it is in the works... Google has shown themselves to be a powerhouse and with such a stronghold on internet traffic, they are more than a force to be reckoned with.

If Google was smart.. They wouldn't make it so much an OS... They would make it something that would operate over windows and basically skin it to have their own interface. From there they could slowly build a true OS and start the takeover of MS once they have shown computer companies their user's dependancy on their product and the need to offer it on computers being sold.

A google OS will not be great, imagine how many programs need to be rewritten. But indeed if they build it on top of windows that would be a idea, but i don't think MS would like that ;)

A google payment system would rock, if they would allow adult related payments, otherwise it would still be nice for mainstream biz.

If Google built something to run over MS then I think they'd have big problems with MS. Building a browser is one thing, but building an OS skin is another thing altogether, I suspect MS would demand some kind of licensing fee.

As for the payment solution accepting adult, I can't see why they wouldn't - they have no problems with adult bidding for terms in their sponsored links. Then again, Google doesn't allow adult sites to join their AdSense scheme so who knows...

Anyone see a microsoft/google merger in the future?

I see ms launching their new os as thats all they have left and will have .. google being worth twice or three times as much as yahoo especially seeing the domains they own plus the possible ways forward with these domains. Google will obliterate ms

Nope no mergers. Tis war. :)

If Google put out a browswer, I'd probably try it.

If Google put out an OS, I'm not so sure.

I will say this much ... I truly wish I'd checked out OpenOffice 2.0 before I bought the new computer. It's come a hell of a long way since I last looked at it, and I would have given serious thought to skipping the copy of Office 2003 I bought at the same time.

Google has done amazingly well in the last 18 months or so. I have no doubt that the folks at MS are watching them closely, but I think anticipating the demise of the Gatesites is a bit premature. Assuming that Google is not just another phenom, they may even give em a run for their money - but I'm not convinced they would outdo them, let alone bury 'em.

Google is great at search, with their newfound cash they are good at acquiring other companies that are good, but their other various ventures are so so.

I read Ries & Ries as often as they update, they have some really great points in a recent article: http://www.ries.com/Articles/popupAdAge.cfm?ID=74

They need to focus on collecting and indexing information and making it available. An AJAX based office suite? Get outta here... not possible any time soon... a new OS? Come on... the relationships they would have to establish with hardware vendors, software developers etc..etc..etc..would drain more of their resources and further dilute their brand. Google = Searching for and finding stuff imho.

I agree, Hoop. OS? They wouldn't be smart to go outa their own neighborhood. :)

Browser? Hell yeah. http://www.betterwhois.com/bwhois.cgi?domain=gbrowser.com

I don't think they will have an OS unless they purchase some linux distribution. A hell of a lot of schools, colleges, universities and more are switching to Linux so they don't have to keep paying for software and support like they do with Office / Windows products. It is saving them a fortune literally.

Google have a lot more going on than a browser / os but I would check out the browser for sure.

I think GoogleOS *is* a possibility that could come from integrating Google Search, Gmail, Google Earth, Google Instant Messaging, Google Video etc... etc... eventually they may decide it all requires integrating. I would watch out for any major OS developers getting hired by Google in the next couple of years.

Just look at what MS is going through over here in Europa, they got a big bill and needed to make a version of windows without Media Player.

Once Microsoft gets its act together, they will once again dominate whatever market they choose to.

same here

I want to see a massive competition between the two companies as is *should* lead to better products for consumers...
