Werid question ... unless there's some ancient history buffs out there. :)

Been doing lots of online history reading (for a good long while now, that is) ... Made it through most of the usuals (Eqypt, Rome, Greece) and Fertile Crescent ones too ... Did the Byzantines, Persians, Ottomans .... then went through the Celts and Germanic tribes ...

But now I'm having a helluva tough time Googling/finding things from The Steppes ... Ok, I find individual things on Sarmatians, Scythians, Huns, Mongols, but not anything in a single place with a cohesive time line and chronology of all in one place (and in English!).

Anyone know of any good sites? Perhaps Colin, Slav, Serge? Btw, looking for online reading, not an Amazon book to purchase. :)

You probably already know this site, but it does link to external sites

http://www.worldhistory.com/
poking around and searching for 'the steppes'
gets me to some external links like http://dienekes.angeltowns.net/articles/ieorigins/

Google (and searching) can be a pain in the ass.

I've typed "world history" in before, got some very good sites. Oddly that's not one of them.

The other night before posting I tried "civilizations of the steppes", nothing. "Ancient steppe civilizations" .... nothing ....

It's when I changed the search from civilization to "culture" and (believe this one?) "people of the steppes" that tons of stuff finally started coming up.

Even on Wickpedia "steppe" and variants would only give me one stupid paragraph on the geography of "a steppe" .... other searches "History of Central Asia" finally gave me good stuff.

Another lesson in both the art of surfing, and how SEs can be as friendly as mud.

Greatest computer game there is!Actually I used to be a huge Civ fan. But then they died after 2. So I went and got all the Age of stuff from Microsoft and played them until the CDs were worn. By the time Civ got back on track and came out with 3, I was sorta burned out from MS and didn't try it.

Guess we'll have to talk, TE. Problem is, I find those games addictive and should probably stay away from them. Won't get much work done. http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/smile.gif

My God you need a life....LOLNope. I could be wasting my time doing many things. Broadening my knowledge isn't one of them. Afterall, if we do not learn from history, we are doomed to make the same mistakes. I want to only make new mistakes. http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/wwww.gif

You're welcome.

That site is addictive, because of all the hiper links you can spend hours reading through it.. My Missus is basque, so I spent a while researching the language, found that site really useful.
