OK, folks: effective or sick and twisted?

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - Smurfette is left for dead. Baby Smurf is left crying and orphaned as the Smurf's village is carpet bombed by warplanes - a horrific scene and imagery not normally associated with the lovable blue-skinned cartoon characters.

I'm not going to post the entire lengthy article, but they're doing this to shock people into awareness of the plight of "ex-child soldiers" in Africa. They have commercials, posters, etc. The commercials are shown after 9PM and aimed at adults "to avoid frightening children." I doubt that will work.

"It's working. We are getting a lot of reactions and people are logging on to our Web site," UNICEF Belgium spokesman Philippe Henon said Tuesday.

I read that article yesterday and thought it was rather extreme.

It seems to be getting a reaction, but that's a sick scenerio.

I don't have a problem with it.

The world can be a very nasty place.
