Or not enough.

I keep on getting requests for quotes on building "community type sites" software.

What's the deal ?

Why so popular ?

Are folks making good money off them or are just a few folks making good money off them ?

Are you talking boards in adult?

Boards in general?

Real "community" sites on a certain topic?

Or MoSoSos?

Not just boards, but they all have boards somewhere in them.

I can't reveal particulars because, like I said, I did quotes and I consider that info that doesn't get divulged unless the person I did the quote for is in the conversation.

But most of them I told them they would be better off modifying a php nuke type framework then trying to go from scratch.

So, community sites, some common theme to draw folks together, offer them various community type features for interaction between members, various media type downloads.

Both adult and mainstream.

Oh you've sorta jumped from your original questions of a social nature to programming ... and I'm trying to keep up. :)

Why so popular? Why, we're social animals.

As to community ware ... in a general manner, yes PhpNuke modified, or possibly Mambo. Specifically, would depend on exactly what.

Well, I am a programmer, but I was just using what they are requesting as examples of what they are trying to do...

But, it seems that lately, lots of folks want to build community sites for some reason or another.

I am just wondering if perhaps they have already missed the boat or not?

How long will it last, is it just a fad ? or is it here to stay and stay ?

I think they are here to stay. People love to meet other people with similar interests. Community groups in the real world have always been popular, but people don't have the time that they used to, or those that may be shy meeting people in person feel more comfortable behind their monitor, so an online community group fills the need.

Define "good money."

I think it's like everything on the 'web ... go back to some of them in a year and see if they are still there.

Community websites are here to stay, not only that, they will be a big part of the future!

We run a large number of non-Adult community websites, that deal with travel locations, or boating/sailing in general. If you can think of a hobby or almost any topic, you can build a community website around it. There is money to be made. Advertising plus kick-backs can add up nicely for a site that is primarily low maintenance. After all, the members become the content ;)

Mr. Washington is a dead president. So is Mister Lincoln. So is Mr. Grant. To some, one or more of them is real money. To others, t'ain't none of 'em.

I would imagine that it's not much different from any other venture ... a few succeed brilliantly, somewhat more plod on to mediocrity, and the majority just blow away like dust in the wind.

As an aside, AOL purchased 80 blogs the other day for $22 million.

Everyone wants to be king of thier own mountain.

Look at places like MySpace, Tribe and LJ. Communities out the wazoo and about some of the dumbest shit.

Because other people do the work for you.. the community.

Instead of creating the content, you're letting other people do it for you.
So once created, they just need policing. Fuckers can grow huge aswell.

If you are considering doing a templated system for resale then go for it .. they will be big for a good while to come with everyone exchanging information / articles etc.

Well, since you're not working on anything like that, I won't offer to beta test it for you. I'd be good at it, because I can break almost anything.

I have references ... :)
