I try to open a url - say, orbitz.com or the thread on Oprano about Calvin and Hobbes - and my browser shuts down.
Any browser - Firefox, IE, Opera.
Does it after I reboot. Does it after I restart. Does it with firewall off. Does it with firewall on.
Any suggestions?

Have you checked for the usual culprit? Virus/spyware/trojans/BHO... ?

If a spyware/virus cleaning doesn't take care of it then I suggest you use the "Go Back feature that allows you to go back to settings from before you noticed this problem.

Yep, you need to get yourself Ad-Adware SE and Spybot. Both are free.
Is this your new machine?
It would sure suck if it is and you've been spanked. :(

Get the latest version of the java runtime environment ( JRE) (http://ads.sun.com/ads/adclick.php?bannerid=402&zoneid=40&source=&dest=http%3A%2F%2Fjava.com%2Fgetjava&ismap=) I've had that be the culprit before.

TE, thanks for the suggestions - went back 3 times, and still no joy.
Drav, I've run three different antispyware programs, all of them up to date - no joy.
Helix - that didn't work either.
Blah.

Maybe you have some corrupt windows operating system files, some of the nastier spyware/virus will attack the. Luckily there is a no cost way to fix that.
Start
Run
sfc /scannow
If you want to see an detailed explanation for the command go to this (http://www.compphix.com/windowsfileprotection.html) website.
Maybe you will get lucky and it will repair it.

PD got a high "five." No particular reason. Really. Just felt like it. Not because of anything caustic he said in a post, certainly. :whistling

Electra's computer seems to be a magnet for malware.
I believe the following is the procedure for the stubborn ones that attack at startup ...
Go in and turn the OS Restore feature to OFF.
Reboot.
Log out and reboot again into safe mode.
Run the the various antispywares then.
Reboot back to normal mode.
If it looks safe, THEN you can turn Restore back to ON.
If that's not the exact procedure, it's at least 95% correct. A search for some of those keywords will probably take you to other forums or service pages that have the 100% correct procedure.
Hope that helps, PD.

I just don't think it's spyware/adware. The only two sites I couldn't open were the one thread on the board, and orbitz.com. It was acting a little funny before that (freezing in a most un-XP kind of way, more like the cursed Win 98 manner). Also, Cntl+Alt+Delete wasn't bringing up the task manager.
Ahhh ... fugit. Used Windows & restored it back as far as it would let me and it STILL did it.
Just to complete the "having a day of it" ... the system restore disks they sent me were corrupt, so they are FedExing me a new set. Of course, they weren't determined to be corrupt until disk 5 of 5 - so now there is nothing on the HD.
Note to self - get some non-rewriteable CDs next time you are at wallymart. When the PC asks you if you want to create backup cds, it wouldn't write them to rewriteable disks.
Ah, well ... all the work I did on the new PC is backed up to this one.
At least the Cardinals won and the White Sox are winning ...
Morgan, thank you. I'm sure glad it's not because I said anything caustic. Been trying to quit that ...
