The local news here had a couple of stories of individuals posing as Katrina victims and getting free stuff. The lady from the Red Cross said they try to "err on the side of compassion." They want the money, etc., to go to "real victims," but they don't want to create a beurocratic hell for the "real victims" to go through in order to prove who they are and why they need. Quite the conundrum.

I wasn't able to really tell much of a time frame on the article to know when they nabbed him. I sent money via paypal on August 31st. On September 5th, the money came back into my account, with a note saying they had decided to fund the operation in a different manner.

I hadn't sent much to them, because it wasn't a recognized charity. At the same time, I was feeling (like lots of people) so much frustration and disbelief that this was not being handled properly that I did send some to help.

The irony in it is that I wouldn't send money to the Red Cross, because my thoughts about their money management. Guess that makes me a dumbass. ;)
