Tell us , "the veterans" , why we should help you , and we might.

Ask us specific questions and we might answer.

Ask me a question like "How do I get traffic?" and I scream at the computer.
(OK that bit might just be because I have a lot of issues)

:)

If "the veteran" runs an affilaite program, then sales training for affiliates is no different than sales training for franchise holders, distributors, etc.

:wnw: Unfortunately it looks like I'm going to have to revert to my backup plan of being nice to you and telling you how deserving I am.

For those of you sharp enough to interpret...that actually *was* lesson one.

I got an "F-" my first couple of times around...and that's only because there was no "G" block on the report card to check.

I was just playing. :) That is a post type that drives me nuts. Like I spend time customizing a database of sites, and I'm going to hand it over to someone I've never met, had business dealings with, etc.

So no newbie can explain to me why us "veterans" should help them?

Sweet , we don't have to then :)

~tentatively raises hand~

Well, were I here asking for something outright, instead of just trying to broaden my circle of contacts and to whore, then I would say this.

I realize that there is little I can do for you at the moment to repay you for you sharing information with me. However, I am going to assume that you are the same as I am...a person with an agenda. I am not going to assume that you will help me out of some notion of "kindness". Matter of fact, I would look at you in askance, were that the case. I am going to assume that you've been around long enough to know that just because I'm a newbie today who has limited knowledge doesn't mean I always will be. I may become someone you'd like to have the opportunity to work with. Is that likely? Perhaps not. But it is a possibility. And a little goes along way in my mind. So while taking 5 minutes to answer a question on a board might be seen as a wasted effort by some, it is not. My memory is long on helpful assistance.

I'd further add that the 'trade off' so to speak, might not be that I'd ever be in a position to repay your knowledge. Facts are, you've been around and have made your mark. There may be little I could teach you. But you may enjoy teaching, if the pupil shows sufficent interest and apptitude. I have both those things. So, if it would not be too much trouble, may I ask your advise on this issue.

It all depends I guess. Offering cash was playing - Nick you neither need nor be interested in the amount of cash that I could pay if I was serious about paying to be mentored.

Are you interested in seeing newbie webmasters get on and progress ? Perhaps, but then why would you add competitors to your own market ? Just means less traffic for you in the end. I personally have never tutored anyone so wouldn't know what the feeling is like to see someone you have tutored do well. I'm told it's a good feeling, is this a good reason for helping someone to establish themself ?

At the end of the day it's a question only you can answer. I could do the hard sell and say, promise to pay back a % of my takings if taking your advice made me some coin - other than some of the things I've mentioned already there isn't anything practical a newbie can offer their tutor other than a cut of the fruit of their labour. But again, if this is only going to be a small amount of cash, then you're probably right, why bother ?

Seems to me the only reason to help others out is because you want to personally (for whatever reason). In terms of getting something back it must be a pretty thankless task, particularly if you have to deal with people who think they will make their first mill after posting 3 galleries.

For me, I can honestly say that the only thing I can offer the people who've helped me out is my gratitude and hopefully if I am lucky enough to do well, there may be a chance for me to pay them back in the future. That's about it really, so if that's not good enough then hey, tough luck on me I guess.

Sorry for the ramble, just my 2 cents and an attempt to give a sensible and pragmatic answer to a very tricky question !

not to rattle any cages but lets put this in perspective a bit....

Lets say when "the veteran" started...im sure he went around to all the boards asking alltypes of questions that seemed dumb to the people of his/her time. So you have to think about how to deal with new people...i for one have been in the biz since 2002....and i learn new shit all the time but i allways ask questions about stupid shit cause "the only stupid question is the one you dont ask"....i for one hate when you go to a board and ask a question that involes the biz and you get 100 views and no answers...but the post right above mine says "Look I just shaved a sheep" and it has 100 replies..whats up with that...so i will help anyone who ask for help anyway i can even if its something stupid..casue i know i have been where they are..

but thats just my 2 cents

Bax, I agree to a certain extent. I know dick all compared to many, but to there are some people I can help.

However, too much of that, and I'll get an attitude really quickly. Because lots of people rely way too much on the boards for answers instead of making an attempt to get the answers themselves, imho.

I'm all about the karma thing, but I still want my efforts going toward people who give me the impression of making their own attempt.

If "the veteran" runs an affilaite program, then sales training for affiliates is no different than sales training for franchise holders, distributors, etc.

In all other brick and morter businesses the franchise holder or distributor has PAID something to get there and has a monetary vested interest, they have basically paid for the training to be provided. Even a saleman with no experience would be lucky to get the job and IF they did it would be at a lower "starting salery", if fully experienced they are THEN entitled to a commision on the sales they make.

Preaching too 100 to reach the 2 that might have a clue is time consuming and time is money.

In the old days we gave out information and shared alot of secrets, some made money ... some were too dumb to get it. Those days are over and long gone. The whole basic structure of the adult net was wrong then and is wrong now but it's too late to fix/change it I guess.

The phone sex people had it right all along, make them pay per minute and keep your mouth shut about industry business.
