Darla, my late, most beloved cocker/poodle mix once grabbed a Rotweiler by the throat and 'splained a few things to him.

Gotta watch those little dogs. They're wirey. (That line is funnier if you've seen "The Replacements.")

We have a 7 year old Shar-Pei who lives downstairs. His name is Dutche (Dutch, aka Brown Dog); haven't got a clue why, as we picked him up at the Humane Society 5 1/2 years ago. He (along with 3 other dogs who could not be adopted) was apparently taken away from a couple who had abused him badly. For the first two years a sudden movement if you were standing near him might make him cower. Aside from being blind as a bat, he's healthy and happy. He's got a cable out the front and back doors, and he likes to sit in the sun (or on the cool concrete of the front porch), and loves to go for rides.

We also have two female cats who live upstairs - BabyFace and Itty-Bitty. They are quite the hunters; they offer sacrifices to my girlfriend at least once a week. Mostly it's mice or birds, but earlier this summer I heard my girlfriend yelling and came out of my office to find them chasing around a little rabbit. They sulked for a week when I took it away from them. Now that he's blind they've become more brazen at messing with the dog.

I have a dog, a samoyed named Dawg and a Quaker parrot named Willie...

In addition, in residence here are:

3 cats (Snowy, Fluffy and Jake)
1 lizard (named lizard)
1 Guinea pig (named Tommy)
and 1 Sun Vunure (named Zini - pronounced Zinny)

And many outside critters who think it's their home because we keep squirrel food and bird food in the feeders most of the year.

Oh, can't forget the handsome Mallard couple that has taken to using our swimming pool for a couple of weeks in the spring and a couple of weeks in the fall :)

A hamster called killer, although she has mellowed and doesn't launch herself accross the cage and sink her teeth into you any more.

then a stray cat who lives in the garden, cloud, who's just had 4 kittens.

Someday, when it's "get a dog time," I'm going to go to the pound and get myself a nice mutt. Something with hybrid vigor who will stick around for a while.

Our Alex, a happy mutt, was about 14-15, when she passed.
Darla, the product of two purebreds, was old at 8.

They say "time heals," TE. Nobody ever tells you how much. :(

Probably not, crumpet. You're just the one who had the courage to say it. :)

Not everybody likes animals, but often, they're put in a position of apologizing if they don't, which isn't fair.

I am exactly the opposite. I am not allowed at either the Humane Society or the local pet shop without adult supervision.

All of the dogs I have had were German Shepherds from rescue places .. Don't have any at the moment as I move around and it would be unfair to them. Love big vicious dogs and no jack russell jokes Nick ;)

I hear you. My husband hits the gas harder whenever we drive past it. He had a woman in one of his classes who manages a cat shelter here in town. She used to torment him by saying "bring your wife down to see it!" (I never got to see it...but frankly, my husband is just as big a sap as I am and he adores cats.)

Newton and Rolo...my oldest daughter lives in Maine. My "grandpuppy" is a huge, purebred black German Shepherd. She trains them. She's even trained a few police dogs. :)

I have Zoe, a brindle English Mastiff and now her puppy, a male fawn named Oz.

We used to have boxers before our mastiffs...and guinea pigs, too...but not right now.

Well, you have to chose your animals carefully. People who buy parrots had better put something in their will about who will get the animal, because most of them will outlive you.

Our oldest cat died this year. She was 18.

I think hamsters only have a lifespan of 2-3 years at best. Rats live a little bit longer and make great pets. (They won't walk off the edge of the table like a hamster or a mouse will.)

*skipping TOTALLY over the nickname part*

He will indeed give you that look. Mine came in a pet shop, with two tiny girls and two even tinier hamsters. The first thought I had at that moment was "great...get the 'death talk' ready." *sigh* We'd been stupid enough to take them into the shop to get some treats for the much longer lived cats and dog. We walked out with two hamsters and all the accessories...and the stuff for the cats and the dogs. Daddy muttered for a long time.

Hi, Technick! :waving:

They sound like delightful little dogs. I had a Lhasa Apso a long time ago. I used to love to watch her run in the back yard. It seemed like all four feet would leave the ground at the same time and she'd form a "u." :)

We have Miss Blackie Kitty. She came with the house we lived in when we were in KY. She adopted us and when we moved, we asked the owner if we could have her and knowing that she would be just spoiled rotten, he agreed.

We also have my parent's rescued Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Shayna.

One Blue and Gold Macaw named Carlos. One long haired male black cat named George. One very large grey male cat named Iggy. One 8 week old black female kitten named Katrina. Plus one ex in Raford prison serving 7 to life. Not really a pet but he is in a cage.

You're a good man. :)
What little I know about scorpions is that they're along the line of rattlesnakes in that they don't strike unless they're threatened. (Of course, the problem comes because *they* decided when they're threatened.)

I touched my first boa constrictor in a mall when my eldest was two. We were just walking around and encountered the display set up. A woman had her snake wrapped around her neck. She smiled and said "go ahead, you can touch him." Well, one doesn't desire to look like a chickenshit in front of one's child, so I petted the snake. "Yes, they're not slimey," the woman said for what was probably the 100th time that day alone. The two year old couldn't pet it enough. Thought it was wonderful.

No, you can't have one, I said repeatedly.

Thankfully, she grew up to have large German Shepherds, a gorgeous rabbit and horses.
