Actually, I see a big difference in the work of the "little known" Rubens and a painting showing a sexual act being in a general area of a museum. That's me.

Oh, and even in Nowheresville we've heard of Goya. They reproduce his works on the side of their 4 x 4's that they go muddin' in.

If that were thrue, then that would have been your choice, wouldn't it? I'm all about parents having choices. Which is why I didn't think the original pic posted here made the woman (who we assume to be the mother) look bad. If the scenario is that they unwittingly came across the painting of a tongued pussy in a general museum, then the choice was removed for her.

If she chose to take them to an exhibit of sexually explict art, then perhaps the children were expressing awe at the size of the dildo or whatever it is crammed up the ass.

Please elaborate....here you are, with 2 kids in the museum and run into this painting.

Now...please describe in the greta details your definition of "hell to pay"

OK...first of all, several things need to be assumed:
One...I'm taking children of that age.
Two...I've checked out the museum ahead of time, received a catalogue, and in general satisfied myself that the paintings are such that we can stand in front of them and either appreciate the art or begin a dialogue.
Note: I did not censor my children's exposure to the world. My kids (and hence every one of their friends) all got honest answers to honest questions.) The middle school art department was given a budget that covered pencils. The teacher spent all summer cutting paintings out of magazines and buying postcards so she'd have something to teach with. On my kid's birthdays, I continued a tradition started in elementary school, which is on their birthday, they gave a book to the library. My youngest gave her art teacher a massive art book - the only damned one the teacher had. We went through it, nudes and all.
Three...what does "hell to pay" mean? With me, yelling. I'm not the censorship type. I take responsibility for what I do. *I* brought my kids there. I doubt any of us would have collapsed in shock in front of that painting. We would have discussed it, how art is subjective, and how acts that might be perfectly natural and quite fun look pretty stupid when they're frozen in time like that. I wouldn't sue; I wouldn't picket; I'd probably just use a lot of rough talk at the curator while my children muttered "oh, for heaven's sake, Mom!"

Now, if I was taking these same children when they were older...I'd be the one standing off to the side muttering "I do NOT know these people" as they critiqued the painting and made better suggestions in voices that rang off the museum walls.

I don't "go places," Serge, for some very good reasons, so we'll pretend you didn't ask me that.

And as for the rest...yes, I have. I've had every possible discussion about sex that it's possible to have with every age of child. Art, television, movies...and most of all, real life.

MorganGrayson

OK...as has been pointed out to me, I got a bug up my ass, which caused some very personal reactions to certain things, causing me to come off like...well...we'll go with asshole here, as I'm not about to quote what I was accused of coming off as. :) (The Diction Nazi is at the Guggenheim, and unable to fix that sentence.)

The very first museum I took my children to was when they were very young. We lived in Louisville, and it was the Louisville Museum. Tiny thing, but they'd just gotten a Rembrandt, which for a small museum was a big deal indeed. Now, neither of the children were old enough to understand why Mommy and Daddy just stood in front of the Rembrandt. (They thought it was a dark, ugly painting of a guy just sitting there.) They found other things to appreciate there.

For many reasons, museums haven't been much of an option in my life. However, I have a passion for books. My library contains a great many of what are generally referred to as "coffee table" books. The kids got to see most of the world's art through books. I lean toward the impressionists, so there is a print of Van Gogh's sunflowers in the kitchen and a Renoir in the living room. They've discussed the paintings in the books with me and understand that although Van Gogh's "Corns Over the Cornfield" absolutely rivets me to the floor, I could never live with it. Too damned much emotion.

At the moment, other than a fantastic volume on the Egyptian Museum, I can't remember what else I own and I'm not getting up.

They went on to develop their own tastes in art and even to introduce me to new art.

Cable television was also fantstic for exposing the kids to art. I'd give a lot to have someone tell me the name of the scultor who puts his sculpture out in the pasture with his sheep. Those pieces particularly effected us when we saw him on television.

Why do I so easily volunteer much more personal information? Well, a very long time ago, on an adult webmaster message board, I mentioned I was agoraphobic. My inbox lit up with webmasters writing me and saying "me, too!" (It's logical if you think about it. This is the perfect job for people who stay indoors a lot.) That's why. I figure that if you've got to be totally fucked up, you might as well spread a little sunshine around if you can.

Sharing that I was afraid of heights led to a most companionable time at a convention with Mark Tiarra, when we rode the glass elevator up to the top of the hotel with our foreheads pressed against the outside glass just to prove we could do it. (Neither one of us threw up and the high we felt afterwards was incredible.)

And on and on.
