So who do you think are the most overrated musicians?

I watched a doc about bob Dylan last night.

I fucking hate Bob Dylan. :)

So for starters...

Bob Dylan
Freddie Mercury
David Bowie......

After watching that documentary it seems at least 25% of the audience turn up to rip into him. LOL

Bob Dylan is a great songwriter, but I'm not a fan of his singing

I'm not much into James Taylor (sory, TE ;))

I also think Wayne Newton is grossly overrated...to a point of sucking so bad he defines suck in a whole new way...there is this Vegas cliche of having to see Wayne Newton when you hit Vegas, but there are so many more staples that are better (and cheaper) to see...

Really? I like Phil and think he's extremely talented...he writes his own songs, sings them, plays piano, drums, sax, trumpet and whatever other instrument he can get his hands on.....truly talented...

Eric Clapton.. That's one man who should have stayed on drugs..Clapton OVER-rated?

Hardly.

His skill with the guitar is irrefutable. Maybe his singing is over-rated, I'll give you that.... but he deserves every acclaim he's ever gotten for his playing.

Another fine example of why "obscenity" will never be defined.

Art is so subjective. For every artist someone hates, there are other people who thing he/she/them are fantastic.

Personally, I've never liked Bob Dylan much, so I avoided the stress and never bought his albums.

Love his kid, though, whose name unfortunately escapes me at the moment. Lead with the Wallflowers.

Sykkboy and I have had some wonderful conversations about the Georgia Satellites and my favorite "Battleship Chains." I imagine we'd get either a "who?" or "you're kidding?" from a lot of people, though. :)

For the record......

bob Dylan is most noted for his sing writing, not his singing, not his instrument playing (although he does a fairly good job on the geetar)

Since, back in the day, everyone had to have a dylan song to do and some of them have been covered by multitudes of artists, I would put him on the list of one of the most prolific and sought after song writers, which does not necessarilly make him a great musician.

Edited in: http://www.baseportal.com/cgi-bin/baseportal.pl?htx=/dylancov/main&localparams=1&range=0,100 lists over 12,000 covers of Dylan tunes and they are not complete........

Phil Collins is a very talented man, and I like some of this material. However, for a while in the late 80s (+/-) you would have thought he was all there was to music. I remember getting into the car and finding five friggin' radio stations playing something by him.

He's good - but he ain't that good. :)

Personally, I'm loving the new Nickelback right now...(and I'm guessing you're not because you're an old fart.)

I play an Anne Murray Christmas album every year despite repeated familial requests to stop. It's my damned album and I'll play it if I want to, I say often!

My youngest always watched the Candian version of MTV (it may not have been called that, I don't remember what she called it) because she said not only were the veejays (if that term is still used) funnier and better, the music played was fantastic. I recognized a lot of names on your list because I've bought them from "dear Santa" lists. :) She preferred Canadian television in general. I'd wander in, watch some teenagers dealing with life and mutter "damn, that was good," and she'd mutter back "of course it is, it's Canadian."

Nickelback-one hit wonder
Our Lady Peace-no hit wonder
Bare Naked Ladies-absolute Shite with a capital S
Sarah McLachlan-one hit wonder continually regurgitated in "remix" albums
Crash Test Dummies-who??
Tragically Hip-never got why they are popular here.
Finger Eleven-who?
Nelly Furtharder-yeah, she really must a low scrape of the barrel
I Mother Earth-again, a pile of wank
Chantal Kreviazuk-you like her? would you say she's a great rocker? as in "sits in a rocker"
Avril Latrine-i think i get my point across
Amanda Marshall-grudgingly admit she might have made one good song
Simple Plan-who the fuck are they? (i know-but they are a bunch of wankers aren't they?)
Sum 41-sum of fuck all if you ask me

A more 'rock classic' list:
Alannah Myles-how does she qualify as a musician-remembe we're talking about music
Lee Aaron-who the fuck is lee aaron?
Jane Arden-shes a rocker? you must really like your rock...
Tom Cochrane-another tosser
Joni Mitchell-she rocked, thats the only one you'll get from me
Kim Mitchell-who?
Rush-bollocks
Trooper-not worth my insult
David Wilcox-name one song, i bet not even you can...
Neil Young-isnt he dead?
