I saw it on the news... I didn't catch the whole story as I was walking back into the room towards the end of it. But they showed a picture of it and at the tail end of the report they mentioned that it had broken...

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that fastcash used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those surfers dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every rawclick I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his divorced bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day that fastcash died.

So bye-bye, my peice of the american pie.
Drove my surfers to CE,
But Ron Levy was dry.

5-10 inches of water per minute are pouring back into the city. Winds too high to get choppers up to drop sandbags into the breach

Damn.. how close is the hurricane? Is this just the very outer edge or is it fairly close? Haven';t looked at the news or weather at all yet this am....

Up here on the radio they haven't mentioned a breach yet, just saying that the wind is pushing water *over* the levee in the 9th ward and so the 9th is filling back up again.

Nagin has said that the levees will hold. Will someone just go fire his ass?

This story on yahoo news:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050923/ts_nm/rita_levees_dc

They're calling the overflow a "breach" - which I know is technically correct, but I was thinking of "broken" as being a "breach". *bonks self on head*

Says water is already waist-high in the 9th.

Yeah, I was thinking "broken" even though I know water coming over is still a "breach". My head was elsewhere I guess.

I think at this point you'd do a better job than Nagin!

In another article I read it said there were 500 buses waiting at the superdome to evacuate people, but as of wed. night only 27 people had taken advantage of them. Wonder if more got out last night?

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
And the General played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
And Catman got his chance!
the young players tried to take the field;
But the old band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day that CE died?

then while Serge was looking down,
Brad tried to steal his thorny crown.
Netpond's courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while Nick bought books on art,
Scottpb practiced marial arts,
Anthony sent email in the dark
The day that CE died.

So bye-bye, my peice of the american pie.
Drove my surfers to CE,
But Ron Levy was dry.
Them good old boys were sending to ARS all high
And singin’, "this’ll be the day DMR dies.
"this’ll be the day that CE died."

Rita's Rains Breach Two New Orleans Levees

NEW ORLEANS Sep 23, 2005 — Hurricane Rita's wind and rain breached two of New Orleans' battered levees Friday and sent water gushing into already-devastated neighborhoods just days after they had been pumped dry.

In the impoverished Ninth Ward, water streamed through gaps at least 100 feet wide in a levee and was soon waist-deep on a nearby street. It began covering buckled homes, piles of rubble and mud-caked cars that Katrina had swamped with up to 20 feet of water nearly a month ago.

Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers said other levees in the city appeared secure, but there were leaks.

South of the University of New Orleans, two separate streams of water gushed from beneath the patched London Avenue Canal, and water six to eight inches deep was soon rushing into homes in the surrounding Gentilly neighborhood.

"Our worst fears came true," said Maj. Barry Guidry, a National Guardsman on duty at the broken levee in the Ninth Ward, a community where the damage was already so severe few structures were expected to survive.

Refugees from the misery-stricken neighborhood learned of the crisis with despair.

"It's like looking at a murder," Quentrell Jefferson said as he watched the news at a church in Lafayette, 125 miles west of New Orleans. "The first time is bad. After that, you numb up."

The water poured over and through sandbags, gravel and soil that had been used to temporarily patch the levee breaks, said Dan Hitchings, a spokesman with the Corps of Engineers. The Corps could not immediately make repairs, but pumps would be turned on to help remove the water, he said.
