My mother is an Oprah devotee and I was helping her in the kitchen and happened to catch today's show which was the first show of her new season.
She announced that she is personally donating 10 million dollars to help the Katrina victims. She will be building homes, buying food and clothing, etc. She also set up a registry on her website where people can donate by buying items for the homes. If one can only afford to buy a toaster, then that's what they buy. She's got everything to furinsh a house available for purchase and there are even homes if someone can afford to donate the money for that.
I think that's a pretty cool idea and a damn nice donation of money on her part.

Of course it's great publicity, but the bottom line is she's helping people who need it so who cares if it's self serving as well.

I grew up watching Oprah when she was still just a small-town reporter sporting the world's worst afro. Watched her take the co-anchor position, which she earned.
Watched her move up through the world and her career blossom into her own show, magazine, etc... all of which, she earned.
She is not fake, ingenuine, discompassionate, etc. She is as genuine as it comes, compassionate to a fault, and *still* a brilliant businesswoman. Just happens to be one with a big heart and the money to back it up.
Her first 5 million was donated before the levees even broke and the shit hit the fan. While Celine Dion sat in her air-conditioned suite and did a telecast interview with Larry King about her 1 million, Oprah was interviewing survivors and trying to get real footage of the situation inside the Domes on the air so people could know the truth instead of the spoon-fed bullshit they were getting from Brown.
Push you weren't even alive when she was slugging it out and earning her way up in the world sitting across from a fucking geek who tried to have a big gray afro as big as hers because he thought it looked cool (he was white), and when women weren't considered worthy to be anchors, much less BLACK women. I know about being poor. Pawn your wedding ring to feed your kids kind of poor. (Yes, I actually did that.) I ran the food drive at the middle school one year, then left the boxes in the car of the "delivery parents." I saw them all an hour later. They'd put my family's name on the list. I cried in the kitchen, torn between total humiliation and gratitude. Those were bad years.
I mention all that in order to express an opinion with a little credibility. I don't "think I know how I'd feel," I DO know how I'd feel.
I wouldn't give a flying fuck what the rich bitch is getting out of giving food to my family. All I'd care about is whether or not my kids ate. Hell, point a camera at me and I'll do white trash gratitude and whore like crazy to make this rich woman look good.
Less taxes for her? Fine.
Big "ups" in the publicity department for her? Fine.
Whatever else she gets out of it? Don't give a shit.
My kids got fed. All I'd care about.

Being that kind of poor gives you a perspective that truly helps later in life. It was also, oddly, a great way to raise kids. My kids valued everything they got and were never greedy like a lot of their peers. They also became absolute sharks when shopping at thrift stores, swap meets, yard sales and the like. :)
My daughter phoned me once about "the greatest pair of shoes she'd ever had in her entire life." She was truly triumphant over both acquiring them...and especially what she'd paid. 25 cents at a neighbor's yard sale.
Whatever else I do in my life, I can always say "I raised kids that can fucking *cope*!!" I like that. :)
