Officials Order Lower Fla. Keys Evacuated

Officials ordered residents evacuated from the lower Florida Keys on Monday as Tropical Storm Rita headed toward the island chain, threatening to grow into a hurricane with a potential 8-foot storm surge.

The evacuation covered 40,000 people living from below Marathon to Key West. Visitors were ordered to clear out of the entire length of the low-lying Keys, which are connected by just one highway.

The weather was clear Monday morning but expected to deteriorate through the day with the approach of Rita's outermost bands of rain.

Hurricane warnings were posted for the Keys and the storm's eye was expected to pass between the islands and Cuba on Tuesday.

Summers in FL are a bitch, but come December when it's 80 degrees and I'm swimming, I'll forget all about hurricane season. :)

Most parts of the US have some type of frequent natural disasters.
The west coast has earthquakes, the midwest gets tornadoes, droughts and dust storms.

Personally, I like having the advantage of time to know when it's going to hit and prepare for it. I remember my first quake experience when I lived in Vegas. Woke up at 3 AM as my bed was moving across the room. That scared the fuck out of me. I like knowing something is coming.
