DELAND, Fla. -- A mother of an 11th grade student in Deland filed a formal complaint Tuesday claiming a book her daughter was assigned to read by her literature teacher is pornography.
Vikki Reed said a 1992 novel, "Cracking India" by Bapsi Sihwal, given to her daughter to read by a Deland High School teacher is not suitable for students and should be banned.
The novel details historic events in India in the 1940s through the eyes of a young girl.
However, Reed says it discusses oral sex and should not be assigned to students.
"The real issue is a 9-year-old girl having or being introduced to oral sex by her cousin who is going through puberty," Reed said. "To me, that is totally inappropriate. I don't know where learning about India would involve learning about oral sex."
The book was recommended to Deland High School students to broaden literary horizons, Local 6 News reporter Tarik Minor said.
"Clearly there is explicit language in the book," school board member Chris Colwell said. "Clearly the book contains material that does require a mature reader."
School board members have assigned a committee to review the book.
Reed's complaint is based on four pages of the 289-page book.
"I was appalled and, to be honest with you, I was a little amazed because my daughter has been in school for 11 years now and I never thought I needed to go through and censor what she is reading," Vikki Reed said.
The committee will deliver their findings about the book to the school board in about a month.

Sure. Why use the book as an opportunity to open a dialogue with your own damned daughter when you can freak out, file a complaint and either scar the girl for life or...scar the girl for life.
Can you imagine that school's hallways? "Your mom can't suck cock!" High school is hard enough without having to deal with that shit.
If my children had been handed a book that I felt was innappropriate for them (something that wouldn't occur as I feel reading should be as encouraged as open dialogues) I would go in and talk to the damned teacher and that would be enough.
I had the word "ethnocentric" defined to me in high school by an excellent teacher. He used as an example a tribe where the girls are introduced to sex by their uncles. To us it was a knee jerk response to incest...but he forced us past that and to see that to *them* it was a safety measure for young girls and a very heavy responsibility for the uncle. "Our" culture is *not* better than "their" culture just because it's our culture. It's just different.

Study Suggests Shift in Teen Sex Practices
A federal survey finds more than half of 15- to 19-year-olds have had oral sex, possibly as a safer alternative. But few report condom use.
By Thomas H. Maugh II
Times Staff Writer
September 16, 2005
More than half of American teens ages 15 to 19 have engaged in oral sex, increasing to nearly 70% for those who are 18 and 19, according to the largest federal study of the nation's sexual practices.

I can see the heavy responsibility to the uncle part, but could you explain the safety measure to the young girls part? There's no inherent danger in a hymen being torn, so I'm lost there?
Fathers used to take their sons to a local prostitute for their "initiation" or "training" (both, really, if it was an experienced woman who gave a crap about what she was doing and wanted the young man to be able to be confident in pleasing his future wife) when the father felt the young man was "of age".
I used to be okay with that concept, but I've moved on to asking when is it ever "okay" to say to a young person "this is the day your innocence goes away", or "today you give up your body to someone else whether you want to or not"?
Basically, I was okay with that concept before I was raped. Afterwards I realized what it was that the parents - in all of their good intentions - were actually subjecting their children to. There's never a right time for someone *else* to decide when you're going to do something so intimate and private, or who you'll do it with. Period. It's not a generational thing, it's not a cultural thing, it's a consensual thing.
And as for the Mom suddenly getting her panties in a wad about what her daughter has been assigned to read, welcome to the real world of public school, woman. Nice of you to wake up and finally take a look around. Your next assignment is to go to page 24 of the published guidelines of SEICUS for sexual education and see how they're telling 5yr olds about masturbation and telling 12 year olds to go online to find gay chat rooms, among other things. After that you'll have a 180-day internship roaming the halls and classrooms of all three levels of public school - elementary, middle, and high - and you will not be allowed to stick your fingers in your ears or cover your eyes. You will be required to review all of the materials and textbooks the students are assigned, including those that have been heavily censored, altered, or outright changed by various pressure groups, such as two counties in Georgia cutting out and/or painting over the famous artwork of Washington crossing the Delaware because his freaking pocketwatch supposedly looked like his penis and testicles hanging out of the CENTER his SIDE-BUTTONED pants.
For the final phase of your awakening, you'll be required to read everything ever written by John Holt.
Maybe then you'll realize that the real threat to your child isn't 4 pages out of this book, but the institution of public school itself.
After that, I'd be happy to help you find support groups and guidelines for how you can homeschool your daughter through the rest of her high school education easily and successfully.

My little degenerates went to urban public schools. Had one of those "what do you want to be when you grow up" conversations with my oldest, who told me that she couldn't be a doctor - she had to be a nurse - because doctors were boys. So, I called up the teacher, scheduled a conference, and asked specifically to see her textbooks because I knew she wasn't getting that shit at home. Had the teacher sweating bullets - she was scared shitless I was some right-wing fanatic coming in to make sure JezuzKeerist approved of the textbooks.
My little granddegenerate is also attending an urban public middle school atm (okay, so maybe the fact that it's a nationally ranked math and science school has something to do with it).
I have several teacher friends who are very glad to see the homeschool movement take off. They say that it has decreased the number of crackpot parents they have to deal with. It hasn't eliminated them, but there are fewer of them with an ax to grind taking up time they could be spending working with kids.
