I'm trying to remember the name of this candy I used to love and havent seen for years. I used to get the butterscotch but I think it came in chocolate too. They were hard, smooth rectangles and they came individually wrapped in foil inside a hard white box similar to a cigarette pack.

This is one of those STUPID things that is driving me insane because I can NOT fucking remember what they are!!!

MissEve...having dedicated what is probably years of my life to muttering "what on earth was the name of that...???" I feel your pain here. It's also pretty miserable to finally have the triumph of remembering...to learn that it's been discontinued. :(

I LOVE Callard & Bowser Toffee. I haven't thought about it in years though. out of sight, out of mind I guess. And now I'm going to be thinking about it, and craving it. Dammit!

Just recently, a bunch of us sat at the bar for hours talking about the penny candy we used to get as kids. We're all in our 40's and 50's and it got really funny watching how excited everyone got bringing back old memories of their favourites.

That was the days when you could buy things like 5 black balls for a penny....and wax lips!!

When I was about 14, there was a "corner market" near the town park we played in. It looked like a converted house. Big, wooden steps up to the front door; a pot bellied wood burning stove with elderly gentlemen sitting around it drinking coffee and chatting; and best of all for us...a big glass case full of penny candy. I remember standing there in front of that case with my friends, doing the "one of those...two of those...uh...OH! Yes! *three* of those!..." This was when 50 cents was serious money. It all went into a little brown paper sack. :)

Thankfully, for a short time there was an independent gas station here that had a penny candy section, so that my own children could know what it was like to be me as a child. So many of the things were the same. They liked the little colored dots on the sheet of paper, too.

I never liked to chew wax. I used to get the little wax bottles full of liquid, delicately bite off the top and drink the liquid, though. I do remember that my mother pretended to be "shocked and surprised" when I came around the corner with wax lips. Each and every time I pulled it, too. Mom's are nice like that. :)

Now it'll cost you a good $2000 for 5 blackballs AND getting your lips waxed.

(Edit: I have no idea what that means, it just sounded good.)
