Okay, as if there were any question at this point whether the operations going on there on Poydras street are motivated out of greed or humanitarianism, just check out Buff's latest post from 1:55pm where he says his post over the past few days can be used as a "quasi-resume".

Nice way to capitalize on all of this tragedy. I especially liked the mention of a book deal or movie rights.

bla bla bla drivel drivel bla

Any respect is gone, man. Just gone. Not that you care, I know. *shrug*
I doubt we'll see pure unadulterated greed and capitalizing on the situation more aptly displayed than the record of that blog, crowned with that 1:55pm 9/7/05 post.

I just got back to Buff's journal this morning, so I had not known what he had posted, but let's see what he actually says:

We had been planning to move to California in December for her modeling career and I was going to look for a full time job there instead of just the part time consulting I was doing for Sigmund here.

Now she's headed to Florida to stay with some friends until I'm done here. I'm pretty sure Directnic.com is going to move to a new primary location, no doubt one much less susceptible to natural disaster than this one.

This means I'm going to be looking for new employment. When this all dies down, I'm going to want to be doing something challenging -- something that will utilize my skill set. If anyone out there reading this could use a guy like me on his team or knows someone else who could, I would appreciate hearing from you.

This blog could be considered a quasi-resume until such time as I get a chance to pull my formal resume off my home computer. In addition to my skills and attitude which you can read about in this journal, I also have an Economics degree from Loyola, New Orleans and 8 years of military experience (2 years in mechanized infantry and 6 years in 20th Special Forces Group). I work well alone or in a group, I am self-motivated, I am an idea man, I pay attention to detail, and I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. I have a lot of experience exercising my leadership skills, but I'm equally comfortable taking orders.

I'd prefer to live somewhere with a beach like Florida or California.

I'm posting this on here because I need to start thinking of Crystal and my future now that our plans have been blasted by Katrina. It's not that I couldn't stay on with Directnic -- it's that the work they'd have for me isn't what I want to do, and it's highly unlikely another situation like this one is going to hit them again.

People have mentioned writing a book or selling the rights to my story as a movie, and while I'm open to the idea, I don't know anything about that stuff. For me, it's much more important to find a new job so Crys and I can move ahead with our lives.

Any help you have along these lines would be appreciated.

Nice taking shit out of context there Carrie. Like I said yesterday, you should be working for O'reilly or some other right wing fascist, because you fit right in.

This is his personal blog, where he records his PERSONAL thoughts, observations, whimsies whatever. That he is starting to think beyond the immediate situation into the future is pretty much a natural phenomena at this point. They are out of immediate danger, there is some down time, so what comes next. He even prefaces it by saying he was thinking of going to Cali and was going to have to find a new job etc....

I don't view Buff as a national hero although he and crew are definitely heroes to directnic and some of the people of New Orleans. I do admire completely their steadfastness and handling of the situation, Directnic/Intercosmos should be extremely proud of their crew.

That you would resort to standard propoganda techniques to denigrate the man speaks volumes about you.

:(how dare you? Carrie is the resident expert on the hurricane, being that she's SO close to the action and all. ;)

What I'm curious about, does she only cut and paste? Or does she have the mental capacity to form her own opinion, and not the one given to her by Fox News?

I actually like having differing opinions than the rest of the group. Makes it more engaging. Don't let the naysayers scare you off, girl! Go Carrie!! http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/ok.gif

Now if we could only get MikeAI to start posting proConservative threads again, this place would really liven up! Seriously, no sarcasm, I have to admit I miss tangling with ol' SaberTooth. http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm doing pretty well now my friend, How the hell are you doing?

As for Carrie and the baseball bat, although you are correct, and it sounds like a great idea, would you really want to subject your good bat to that abuse?

Carrie is a friend of mine (an internet friend although we did meet in person back at deekfest '98) and any insults I make should be taken as being said with a tongue kind of in cheek.

She has been on the internet quite a long time, has written a couple of books on html and such, has done web design, programming and a whole bunch of other stuff prior to discovering the adult side of the net (about the sme time I started getting active and coming out of lurking I think). She was on Netpond as a reg for a while, posted over here for a bit, disappeared for a while and is now back :)

And she can tell you anything more you want to know :)

She's -- I bet nobody picked up on this -- very opinionated. And for good or bad a pitbull will let go of a four pound steak before Carrie will let go of an argument. http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/laughlong.gif

Realized that it would not be fair to not address this a touch more rather than just laughing... :)

Carrie is a far cry from Confucy. First of all, Carrie actually has built and owned sites, can write programs and is actually the age she says she is.

In addition, Carrie will seldom be the first one to resort to name calling etc to win an argument. When presented with such, she can give as well as she gets, but she can (not often but it does happen) admit when she is wrong and apologize.

Carrie is the kind of person that when arguing, goes single minded and tunnel vission into her side and can come off rather bitchy at times, but at the same time, I personally know that if any one of us or even a total stranger showed up at her door, she would feed them, clothe them if she could and treat them with the proper respect due any human being.

So, while she is a facist right wing bitch when it comes to politics etc, she is the salt of the earth as a person.........

I'm grateful to read this thread. I was afraid we had lost the ability to disagree with one another with respect. To paraphrase "I disagree with what you just said but will fight to the death to defend your right to say it."

Sarettah started the original "slut" thread because he has a relationship that permits him to use such odd endearments with his disagreements. Unfortunately, that created a bandwagon that led to others who did not have a relationship *also* using words that were not endearments.

I wonder what we'd be talking about right now if there hadn't been a hurricane?

Excellent point. I've been slamming Carrie, but only for what she says, not because she says it. While I may vehemently disagree with her point of view and think that it's sheer dittohead, it's never personal. More power to her for jumping in the gumbo.

In this case it's more like "I might disagree with Carrie's opinion from time to time, but I'd die defending her right to take me to bed."

Has a better flow to it.

Hey vdm, did I ever tell you that I still have a whole bunch of messages from a certain board saved, where a certain person who lived in socal at the time kept asking another certain person who also lived in socal to go motorcycling with them and flirted in a pretty big way....

(and any that I don't actually have anymore I will gladly recreate from how I remember them)

I just wanted to know if I ever told you that?

I'm chuckling at some of the metaphors used to describe me. When I feel really strongly about something though, they're pretty much true. I look better than Confucy, though. At least I hope so. :)

Sare, you know I hate to see someone taking advantage of a situation where other people have been knocked down. Buff's blog started out personal long ago; it changed drastically though once he and Sig realized the opportunity they had with all of the media attention. At that point, "Buff" became "Michael Barnett" when signing his posts, it became a big PR campaign for DirectNic (via chunk of info on top of blog, Sig's entries not as Sig but as CEO of DirectNic, using the blog for press releases and letters to employees which they would have gone to DirectNic's site to see, etc), and now for Buff himself.

Some folks are thinking right now "well what's wrong with seizing an opportunity when you see it"... usually nothing. But if it's an opportunity that capitalizes on human tragedy, isn't there a line you've crossed?

Nick's always implied that when you step into this industry, you leave your morals at the door (paraphrasing) - I've never been able to do that. To me, what Sig and Buff are doing is wrong, they've crossed that line. *shrug*

There is no doubt in my mind they have taken the opportunity to promote not only the firm but themselves.

Awesome!

Why the hell not?

There was no need to throw off any morals in doing so.

Let's see...fundraiser after fundraiser after fundraiser to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina recoup their losses and start over.

So...it seems to be OK to receive aid and begin again.

If you continue the self-sufficiency that you've demonstrated throughout the entire ordeal and work *yourself* to recoup your losses and start over...that's bad and you should be ashamed of yourself for "taking advantage of a situation."

So...starting over with aid is good.
Starting over with your own efforts is bad.

I think I've got it now. It just needed to be explained to me.
