New Orleans Police Accused of Beating/Detaining Reporters

Reporters Without Borders has issued a warning about police violence against journalists working in New Orleans. According to the group, on Sept. 1 police threatened a reporter and photographer from the Toronto Daily Star at gunpoint because they were seen covering a clash between police and looters. When police realized the photographer had snapped photos, they threw him to the ground, grabbed his cameras and removed the memory cards containing about 350 photographs. His press card was also torn from him. When the photographer asked for his photographs back, police officers threatened to hit him. Police also detained a photographer from the New Orleans-based Times Picayune after he was seen covering a shoot-out involving the police. Police smashed all of his equipment on the ground

Do you beleive everything you read? Do you think the biggest news paper in La would report this if it happened to their photog?

There was a great article in BBC or anotker UK website talking about the first thing that fills a communication vaccum is rumors.

Yes Mike I think the paper will report it...

""""The most frightening experience was still to come for one reporter, Gordon Russell, reporting from New Orleans. Last Thursday, when the streets seemed ripe for riots to break out, he and a photographer drove from the Convention Center into the aftermath of what looked like a shootout. A bloodied body lay on the ground and police officers had their weapons up.

The photographer, Marko Georgiev, a freelancer for The New York Times, said that as he slowed his car to take a photo, the police trained their weapons on the car. Ordered from the car, the two men were pushed face-first against the car and nearby walls with hands up. Police officers threw their notebooks and camera equipment to the ground and ordered them to leave.

Mr. Russell, quoted by his colleagues on the Nola.com Web site later that day, said: "I'm scared. I'm not afraid to admit it. I'm getting out of here." The headline above the report said "City Not Safe for Anyone.""""

Or, how about Editor and publisher "America's Oldest Journal Covering the Newspaper Industry"

Russell witnessed a shootout between police and citizens near the Convention Center that left one man dead in a pool of blood. Police, perhaps caught off guard by their sudden arrival on the scene, slammed Russell and the photographer against a wall and threw their gear on the ground as they exited their SUV to record the event.

The journalists retreated to Russell's home Uptown where they hid in fear. They planned to flee the city later today.

Or maybe the Baltimore Sun:

But reporting in the city remained a treacherous endeavor. Yesterday afternoon, The Times-Picayune posted on its Web site a dispatch, headlined "City Not Safe for Anyone," about one of its reporters, Gordon Russell, who, traveling in a sport utility vehicle with a photographer from The New York Times, "feared for his life and felt his safety was threatened at nearly every turn."

'I'm scared'
Russell described "throngs of hungry and desperate people" displaced by the flood who overwhelmed law enforcement officers and military personnel. "There was no crowd control," Russell said. "People were swarming. It was a near riot situation."

*shaking head* This is America?
I wonder if they're going to be able to do something about these cops who took full advantage (beating people up, looting, etc) when the shit hit the fan. You can't fire the entire police force, some of them were actually out there protecting and serving - but which were which?

From my understanding (and it's limited at best ;) ) those who are helping others repair and fix their problems are exempt from the evacuation. That would include the Directnic's of NOLA. That wouldn't include the reporters who probably currently comprise the majority of those still in NOLA. Kinda like little cockroaches they keep appearing en masse :okthumb:

There are quite a few reporters I wish they'd take a swing at....

Ah, yes ... when in doubt, blame the media. :o

As far as I know from news reports, the evacuation didn't become mandatory until today. I really don't think that matters - last time I checked, the United States of America was not one of those countries where operations like this are carried out in secret.

And for the record - I would feel the same way if the individuals beaten were merely acting like reporters - say, for Fox News.

Because they are idiots and seem to be creating stories just for the camera. As you know, none of the "good" news made it on the news for days. If you listened to the media, most every evacuee had a gun and was raping 2 year olds and killing old people. Then there are those I just don't like at all anyway. Geraldo comes to mind. ;)

Edited to add - it's really no different than the media reporting ANYTHING. They are just meeting with people tired and willing to fight back in NOLA......

I've seen plenty of good news from the media over the past week. Families reunited, missing people found, those thought to be dead found alive, regular Joes doing good deeds.

Maybe if you don't like Geraldo, you should stop watching him? Just a thought. ;) I haven't seen Geraldo in years, I didn't even know he was still alive!
