1.1 million more Americans in poverty
37 million Americans total living in poverty in 2004, according to the Census Bureau.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. poverty rate rose in 2004, driven by an increase in the number of poor non-Hispanic whites, while the median income for Americans as a whole remained stable, the government said on Tuesday.

The percentage of the U.S. population living in poverty rose to 12.7 percent from 12.5 percent in 2003, as 1.1 million more people slipped into poverty last year, the Census Bureau said in its annual poverty report.

The ranks of the poor rose to 37.0 million, up from 35.9 million the previous year, the report said.

The poverty rate rose for only one group -- non-Hispanic whites -- which had an 8.6 percent poverty rate for 2004 compared with 8.2 percent in 2003. The poverty rate declined for Asians and remained unchanged for blacks and Hispanics, the report showed.

The real median household income in 2004 totaled $44,389, flat from 2003 and marking the second consecutive year in which income showed no change.

Black households had the lowest median income among race groups, at $30,134, while Asian households had the highest, at $57,518. The median-income for non-Hispanic white households was $48,977 and was $34,241 for Hispanic households.

Income was unchanged in each census region except the U.S. Midwest, where it declined 2.8 percent to $44,657, the report said.

I believe in my heart of hearts that President George W. Bush is working hard every day to change that number from 1 in 9 to ....

This is where poor people are stupid. They will hear this story and complain that about how their children are going to be worse off than them. The lesson they SHOULD learn is that if you want your children to have a better life marry an asian.

If poverty was the only choice in life, then I would rather be poor in the USA than in the ex. Somalia.

But what is poverty anyway? They should be measuring "quality of life" - I think that is what is important, not some dollar/cent argument.

would that be rude of me to say 'it sucks to be that 1 of 9' ?

The definition of poverty may be different for some. For example, I have a friend who's recently divorced. A young single mom 25 years old with two kids. She is now back in school, she gets some federal assistance but not much. Her ex husband who cheated on her and left her pays no support of any type other than a $50 check here and there.

I'm not sure how common a situation like this is but this has been my experience with people who'd be considered poor, or living below the poverty line.

However, with her parents help she has a very nice house and a very nice car, not new but new enough and reliable and safe for her and her kids.

I have other friends even my age who are rooming together with other friends and none of them make much money but they live cheaply and enjoy life. They too would be considered poor.

So to think that all of Poor America is living in dirt floor huts or under an Expressway bridge think that their definition may be skewed for good news.

Being "poor" in one country certainly can be a lot different than in another.
