Looting Begins in New Orleans

By ALLEN G. BREED, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 50 minutes ago

With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

At a Walgreen's drug store in the French Quarter, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers.

When police finally showed up, a young boy stood in the door screaming, "86! 86!" — the radio code for police — and the crowd scattered.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.

"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

Mike Franklin stood on the trolley tracks and watched the spectacle unfold.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

Nothing surprises me anymore.

Even that repetitive, asisnine "for people who have been repressed yadda yadda" line.

Oh. And Technick? You're grounded. ;)

Unfortunately that is so true. First it's the looters, then it will be the price gougers. I hope everyone enacts the same law that Florida has. If someone is price gouging after a hurricane, they get arrested.

A time like this is when you should help out, not hurt your neighbors.

I read that and my jaw dropped. That lady is deluded if she thinks the same thing wouldn't happen in Philly, let alone tons of other cities across america, if a comparable situation happened there.

It's shitty it happens but that type of behavior isn't exclusive to New Orleans. I find it particularly amusing coming from someone who lives in a town where they are known to cheer an opposing player getting hurt when what might be a life threatening/altering injury occurs.

That's OK. We're used to the jealousy from towns with lackluster, boring players and the fans to match.

I don't think I've ever read a more assinine post in the history of Oprano!! That you would even REMOTELY suggest Philly fans are better than packer fans is laughable at best, idiotic at worst.

FREUDIAN PROJECTION

The following is a collection of definitions of projection from orthodox psychology texts. In this system the distinct mechanism of projecting own unconscious or undesirable characteristics onto an opponent is called Freudian Projection.

"A defense mechanism in which the individual attributes to other people impulses and traits that he himself has but cannot accept. It is especially likely to occur when the person lacks insight into his own impulses and traits."

"The externalisation of internal unconscious wishes, desires or emotions on to other people. So, for example, someone who feels subconsciously that they have a powerful latent homosexual drive may not acknowledge this consciously, but it may show in their readiness to suspect others of being homosexual."

"Attributing one's own undesirabe traits to other people or agencies, e.g., an aggressive man accuses other people of being hostile."

"The individual perceives in others the motive he denies having himself. Thus the cheat is sure that everyone else is dishonest. The would-be adulterer accuses his wife of infidelity."

"People attribute their own undesirable traits onto others. An individual who unconsciously recognises his or her aggressive tendencies may then see other people acting in an excessively aggressive way."

"Projection is the opposite defence mechanism to identification. We project our own unpleasant feelings onto someone else and blame them for having thoughts that we really have."

Looters should all be shot.

If they survive, they should be shot twice.

I could almost forgive looting for survival, breaking in for bottled water, food, etc.

However, it's the opportunists breaking in and grabbing non-essentials that need to be shot....thru the liver.

If I was in the middle of this, my house flooded and no help anywhere to be seen, you can damn well bet Id be looting too.

Id be grabing Bottled water, First Aid, non parisable food and what ever it takes.

The looting is such a small small small scale of the problem that is occuring over there..

The news loves it, its entertaining to watch a negro in a store stealing watches and shit.. But look at the bigger picture..

There is a very serious issue going on here, and some street people ripping off walmart isnt hardly an issue..

Having water to drink is.

Yes, the media loves to get video of black people looting. They just choose not to broadcast anyone else in the act. Whatever.

I'd agree with that if I seen them making off with bottled water and canned goods...not Tommy Hilfiger pants and Rocawear Shirts. ;)

I didn't expect anything else though.

Didn't see too many white guys on the news in the midst of the looting. They must have all been at the Abercrombie & Fitch store or something. Weird. :D

While I do agree that "looting" can be the only way to survive after loosing everything, then even the looters must be aware about the difference of taking what you need to survive, and then taking things for personal gain.

Sure the media love to show bad human behavior, but there wouldnīt be anything to show, if people were not looting (looting jewelry stores are not survival - thats theft).

However Iīm sure that there are much more important things to do, then going after looters.

With 25 billion in damages, its no surprise some poor mcdonalds worker wouldn't think twice about grabbing a drill, sledge hammer and a bookbag and looking for some atm machines, who's owners will be repaid by insurance companies. When your poor and you've got nothing and the town is now available for a free shopping spree....how many of em are going to resist?

Easy to look down on em, probably not as easy to actually be them their whole lives.

Now a middle class person looting should deffinately be shot at close range!

well on the one hand, Looters( humans) will ALWAYS do what they need to survive this is rule number one, I mean if I did not have water or food for my family, you can bet your ass I am gonna take it from somwhere.

but as like NickPappageorgio brought up, survival does not include looting fashion and jewels, and stealing cash would be just as bad, but as far as water and food or first aid supplies , I think those guys should be cut some slack,

Smart thing to do is tell the shopkeepers that they will be reimbursed for their goods, and to extract as much as possible in order to pass it out so people do not have to take it .

Fuck, I have been poor in my life... I didnīt go on a rampage and pillaged every town on my way, because I didnīt have lots of money.

Should we blame their actions on society - are they really just a pack of hyenas... who fucking cares what their reasons are for stealing! These people are not 10 year olds, and their actions can not be excused by youthful ignorance or human desperation. They are taking calculated advantage of a human tragedy - a bunch of fucking wankers, who will never escape poverty, because their mind-set is locked in their own thieving self-righteousness.

I was going to button my lip on this because of the way it's being covered on the news here. It would seem the National Guard are getting kitchens organised and water can be collected from certain areas... but I know that because I've got electricity and a working TV!

That doesn't mean it's happening though. :(

Still… you can't eat or drink jewels or stereos....

you would have gotten arrested. these folk don't have to worry about that now. I'm not saying they should do it or that I would, but if you work at mcdonalds and barely make a living wage, and can now go out and grab a buncha high end clothes and stuff without getting arrested, and rationalizing that its just another couple bucks for the insurance company out of 25 billion....who's not gonna say fuck it,this is the only way I can get something extra for myself and my family.

So you think people don't steal solely because of the fear of getting caught?

well of course not soley, people have morals. I'm saying these people DO steal because of the lack of fear of getting caught, and these in particular have yet to be able to get ahead in life. Alot of people will comprimise some morals to get something extra if they don't fear reprecutions.

Well, they would have to catch me first http://oprano.com/msgboard/images/smilies/shootingsoldier.gif ;-)) ... but yes, I do understand what you are trying to say - however I disagree that it is "normal" or "understandable" human nature to go looting goods at the first sight of problems.

The looters would not survive 5 minutes, if there were real anarchy - they are taking advantage of a situation, where "normal" people are working on solving much more important issues - and that is why the looters reaction is not normal. Human nature is survilve first - not jewelry, dvd players etc.

The point is she's not commentating only on the looters but the entire city of New Orleans as a whole and trying to imply the entire town isn't sophsticated and trying to say that couldn't possibly happen in Philly. Sorry, but the reality is it could and very likely would. It isn't elitist at all to point out the truth of something and the truth is that looting like that could happen in practically any city in the states under similar catstropic circumstances.

Totally agree. I mean, these people definitely have NOT had the same opportunities as everyone else. To hell with that whole "do for myself or noone will" theory...it's bull. :rollseyes

Sorry, everyone DOES have the same opportunities in life. People use that whole underpriveledged shit as a crutch and nothing more. Same with the whole reparations shit. We can't figure out a way to make it on our own..so let's make up some shit where we can get paid for something that happened 200 years ago. Bah...

I got no pity for those fucks. I was raised on the poor side of the tracks just like many here at Oprano I am sure...

You either make the decision to do for yourself...or you leech.

Those people looting are animals and are not the same breed of human as I am. I say that with no regrets. "Boohoo....I only work at McDonalds...BooHoo...I live in the projects...but YAY I have $3000 rims on my Escalade..."

Yeah.

Humans will be humans, but I believe people that loot during a disaster should, and will rot in Hell. There is such a thing as Red Cross in place to give aid to people who have lost everything, oh but then how would they impress thier friends after normalcy is restored?

I dunno, last time I was at a Mcdonalds the guy who served me seemed pretty limited in his ability to "make it". When you're too dumb to know that "only onions" doesn't mean "extra catchup, no onions", odds are your not going to be able to get your own successful business going and be able to afford that plasma tv. Alot of people are just far too dumb to make anything on there own.

Its not like these looter idiots will be able to take all their steroes and TV's that they stoled with them when they get rescued and evacuated anyway. I read they cant even bring their pets. And the stuff would probably just get destroyed in the mess if it was just left in the flooded stores anyway.
