TORONTO (CP) - Toronto police often bemoan the lack of help from the public while investigating crimes.
But that certainly wasn't the case Tuesday evening when two cyclists came to the aid of police officers pursuing a fleeing suspect in the east end.
Two officers checking a report of a gun in a car stopped a vehicle and were in the process of arresting two people when one suspect took off on foot.
The officers gave chase, and while running after the suspect, two men on 10-speed mountain bikes stopped to offer the officers their bicycles.
The officers sped off on their newly acquired bikes and nabbed a suspect about five blocks away.
The Good Samaritans had followed on foot and after being thanked by the officers, got their bikes back and rode off.
But the officers neglected to get their names and now want to find them to award them commendations.
"These two citizens were vitally important in helping our officers make the arrests," said Det. Derek Young.
"I want the opportunity to thank them - they represent what is so good about the people of this city."
Both the fleeing suspect and another man in the car were charged with 14 offences.
A loaded 9-millimetre semi-automatic handgun was seized.
