View Full Version : Anybody interested in doing a "group project"

Domtheboy's question over in http://oprano.com/msgboard/showthread.php?t=42007 got me thinking that it might be cool to do a little group project around setting up a tgp and feeding it from remote thumbs.

It would probably benefit noobies the most, but I am sure that from a project like that almost anybody could gain some pretty useful info.

I picture the project steps would be:

First, round up the participants.

2. Do a little html workshop one afternoon to make sure that everyone has the htm skills necessary.

3. Do a remotethumbs workshop on another afternoon and get everybody all set up on the servers proper.

4. Then a little workshop to build a couple of little php or java scripts to do some trades and banner rotations, that sort of thing

5. and then a final workshop to put it all together.

I will volunteer to run whatever workshops I know enough about to do a good job with and I am sure I can find a few other folks to help out.

So, anybody up for it...

Any newbies or for that matter anybody that would like to be involved go ahead and post in this thread. If I can get 5 people that are willing to play then I will go ahead and start coordinating the scheduling of it.

Thanx in advance :)

My role will be that of the "impossibly cheerful newbie" who would like to branch out into something different and increase her knowledge base.

I mentioned the addition of a submit addon to the Oprano TGP hub freepornbandits.com . He said he would drop that in as soon as he was able to get back home and code it up.

TGP project is a year old this week. Sare was involved with its inception. Ill remind Boldy again. In the meantime I would encourage each and everyone of you to build niche specific TGPs with remote thumbs and we can hook them into freepornbandits.com .

The next project I would like to start would be a network of top lists.

Need some input, just not sure on what...lol....

Since you started this with a post..

How are you on html first of all ?

Do you handcode, generate, what ?

Do you use styles at all ? And if so, inline or style sheets ?

Have you done any scripting ?

If so, what ? Javascript, php, asp... ?

I am still trying to figure out a schedule of sorts, so I will also ask, would you want to do this whole thing across one day, a couple of days, a week, a couple of weeks ?

That should be enough for now :)

Right, here goes...

HTML - I have a basic knowledge and have previously built very basic pages using entry level HTML commands. As far as the galleries go that I submit, I use purchased templates. This is because I would never in a month of Sundays be able to produce templates of the quality of those I'm using now. So to summarise, I'm familiar with HTML commands and what they do, I also have reference books and so on so I wouldn't be completely all at sea if asked to look something up or read up on a particular area.

Regarding styles (I'm assuming you mean CSS ?) - again I'm familiar with styles and what they do (setting a common font, font size, colour etc) so that you can alter multiple areas of an HTML page all at once without having to manually go in and enter all the tags within the code by hand. I have no practical experience of using them other than the practise exercises within one of the books I have.

Scripting is completely new to me - I've got no scripting experience whatsoever I'm afraid (God this is the worst CV I've ever written  )

So now that I've admitted that I know virtually nothing about how to use a PC other than find smut on the internet, I'll give you a little time to stop weeping openly and think about a schedule :p Joking aside, I think it would probably be best to plan across a couple of weeks doing small segments as we go. I'd also add that one thing I have in my favour is that I do pick new stuff up quickly so I'm pretty confident that I can go from unseeded amateur to pro pretty quickly :okthumb:

Over to you dude !

Cheeky bugger :p

Yeah I have my own domain set up and galleries hosted, but the thing is I've had a lot of help from friends in getting that all set up. As you can see there are big gaps in my knowledge so I want to start from the ground up to make sure I don't miss anything.

That's brilliant, and I really appreciate the offers for help. Whenever someone asks me about my level of ability in any subject I always assess myself very harshly.

The reason being is that I'd prefer start an exercise and have my teacher be pleasantly suprised (i.e, "When we started you said you knew nothing about this Dom, but you actually know more than you think you do") at my level of ability, than to start learning something new, f@ck it all up and have people saying "Jesus, this guy said he knew HTML and he knows bugger all !". I hope that makes sense ;)

Just in case anyone is worried about my ability (or lack of it) though, I'd say that I started submitting galleries in Nov of last year and at the time I had no experience of working in the adult game whatsoever. In that time I've learned how to submit, where to submit to, what the different niches are, how to use Dreamweaver to add photos to templates, how to use thumbnail cropping software, how to improve and edit photos in P/shop and so on and so on. So I'm confident that if I managed to pick that little lot up then I should be able to handle getting down to the nitty gritty in scripts and so on :okthumb:

Good. A basic knowledge is all that's really needed :) I suck at page design too and I have a fucking art degree..lolol... It just has not translated over very well.

I use a bit of style pages (css) but am more likely to use a combination of html and inline styles than I am to use a style sheet. CSS can be powerful stuff, so we should probably play with it a bit. Inline style is very similar to just straight HTML so that might be easier to understand at first, but in reality style sheets and inline are both the same animal for the most part.

Scripting is completely new to me - I've got no scripting experience whatsoever I'm afraid (God this is the worst CV I've ever written  )

Cool, programming is what I know best and eventhough you could do a tgp with a lot of straight html with ssi calls, it will be more fun if we throw in a little php. Also would let us have a submission page and a little database if we want.

I believe the original request was how to make a tgp with the idea of later accepting submissions. However, if we want to play with php and mysql, we could probably do a pretty elementary submission database type thing too... :)

Let me explain how this works, sarettah.

I ask a question, like "are we building a TGP that accepts submissions?"

You say either "yes" or "no." :)

Nothing that has "php" or "mysql" in it strikes me as "elementary."

Cool I'd love to learn a little more about all this stuff...

My experience in html.....

I surf the net really well...

To answer Sare's questions

How are you on html first of all ? Weak - Beginner

Do you handcode, generate, what ? Frontpage

Do you use styles at all ? And if so, inline or style sheets ? What?

Have you done any scripting ? no

If so, what ? Javascript, php, asp... ? nothing like that

Have done C++ though.... if that helps :P

Seriously though. I've done a course in college last year called "e commerce" this was essentially "build a (mainstream)site using frontpage" so that's all I really know. Although I do know a little more than that, It has been a really long time since I've actually built anything.

scripting I know nothing about. I'm learning xml a little now for my new job.
