Strange things are happening in Washington these days.
First you have the Downing Street Memo (http://www.downingstreetmemo.com/) which brings a lot of things to light. Like how Bush's government did not believe Iraq was a greater threat than other nations; how intelligence was "fixed" to sell the case for war to the American public; and how the Bush Administration’s public assurances of "war as a last resort" were at odds with their privately stated intentions.

This all ties in nicely with something else. How Bush has now side-lined the CIA (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1069065,00.html) and excluded CIA director Porter Goss from National Security Council meetings in favour of John Negroponte, the new director of National Intelligence.

How convenient that the Bush administration now has their own private intel agency working hand in hand with Homeland security. They can take the intel they think will further their agenda and ignore the rest of it (hmmm... 911?).

This is happening right in everyone's faces. You know the old adage "can't see the forest for the trees"?

I'm not exactly known for my robust defense of the Bushites. Still, IMHO, people are making too much of the whole "exclud[ing] CIA director Porter Goss" stuff.

Favoring Negroponte over Goss is little different than favoring the National Security advisor's recommendations over those of the Secretary of State.

This administration operates more on ideology than reality. That would still be true if the ill-timed intelligence reorganization had not taken place. Arguing about which pencil-necked geeks attend specific meetings won't change that.

The thing about "The Downing Street 'Memo'" is there is no real smoking gun for Americans. Everybody with the brain of a slug knows that "... intelligence was "fixed" to sell the case for war to the American public; ... the Bush Administration’s public assurances of "war as a last resort" were at odds with their privately stated intentions".

Same thing happens in favoring either the Director of the NEC or the Secretary of the Treasury. At various times, one or the other has been favored in the past two administrations.
