View Full Version : Some Music Classification Help

Ok, I'm looking over this list in the paper for bands/music at the local bars & clubs. And I see how this particular rag has really stretched out what bars it classifies as playing what music. So would like some opinions here please from both all you listeners and if any of you go out to the clubs especially.

Ok, first, the standards ... Rock, Dance, Jazz, R&B, Country, Latin, Reggae, Hip-Hop.

Here comes in a bit of confusion. They list places playing House but they also list Techno seperately. Similiar, no?

They also list here Trance, Punk (it's the 70s again?), Goth, Breakbeat, Alternative, and Electroclash.

Ok, I guess I'm old. What is what above and what is similiar and how do some of these differ, and what the heck is Breakbeat and Electroclash and Trance? :)

House and techno... well techno is house but house is more than just techno ;-)

Trance and breakbeat are house, punk and alternative are more like really bad rock. Electroclash? Probably a new abomination I'm too old to be familiar with ;-)

Here's my take given the standards you've listed:

Trance, Breakbeat, Electroclash, House are all dance music (but all are very different, still pump pump pump though)

Punk and Goth are Rock

I've no idea what Alternative is though

Alternative generally refers to Alternative rock... anything new but not quite mainstream yet...

in the day it would have been seattle rock bands like nirvana before they became popular.

these days it would be bands like green day to a certain extent... dave matthews, mudvayne , seether, slipknot.

but also adult alternative such as lifehouse, kelly clarkson, and 3 doors down.

in other words Alternative music is anything that is and ALTERNATE to mainstream music.

usually has more of a rock sound and beat

Alternative means bunch of fucking hippies trying to sound different so they are considered rebelious and make crappy music in the process.

If it is has energy, is tasteful and tuneful, have feeling or feel to it, has a good groove, is intellectual or down right sexy it works for me

A little grind and some knowledge of how music should be structured, maybe some anger but not angst

Play it from the crotch, the heart or the mind and not be pretentious works for me

Hot funk, cool punk it's still rock and roll to me

made easy, Aerosmith = God

Pearl Jam = pretentious, whiney bullshit that influnced way too many want to be's

Where's Frank, Louis and Ella?

At the risk of sounding faggy... Ella is great. so are most of the jazz/blues stars of that era.

not so much a fan of acid jazz though. for those of you who are asking WTF is that... acid jazz is jazz made with synthesizers and is a mix of techno and jazz

Ok, so "House" is the all encompassing one that Techno, Trance, Breakbeat, and such would come under then, yes?

And that is all "dance music". But not disco, right?

And alternative, goth and punk are sucky rock.

And everything is shite.

but I only put a selection on there... I even like pop sometimes (i.e. Bjork), or some quebec singers (Richard Desjardins)...
