The house next door got raided last night.

The Police found a grow op in it.

Quite exciting.

And no they wouldn't let me have any ;-))

It seems its the latest trick , put the grow ops in good areas where basically people keep themselves to thereselves.

Every house in this area is worth prolly a minimum of $600k and is at least 3000sq ft.

I never knew that even for growing weed they treat it as hazardous material and all wear gas masks and stuff.

Its the sodium lights for hydroponics that give it away normally .. there is a glow at night that helicopters can pick up as though it was on fire and a beacon in the night sky.. allegedly

They want to make sure they're there to confiscate the illegal drug...

Yeah ... there was a case 6-8 years back where the power company alerted the cops, the cops flew their helicopter over at night with the FLIR, got the readings they would have expected from a grower, did a great big swat-team bust ...

and busted a guy growing tomatos and tropical flowers.

It has to be very extreme for that to happen, many serious reef aquarium owners have a lighting system that will put most grow operations to shame, me included :okthumb:

Here in Canada the power companies are NOT allowed to call the cops just because your home is using more than within a 'normal' range of power...as long as you pay your bill, it's no matter to them...it's illegal for them to reveal your personal hydro use to anyone....and goes against our rights of privacy. ;)

IF, on the other hand, you get caught either:

a. Stealing hydro (easy to do but they're much sharper catching this now)

or

b. NOT paying your bill

....different story. :P

Nick,
Remember that townhouse complex off of Cape Horn in Coquitlam that got busted a few months back? That's where I started my porn empire before we bought a house on porn money....haha

It WAS a nice place...at least when I lived there.....they had like 27 units (out of 84) or some such set up...craziness....couple weeks after the bust we were in Van and drove through the complex...our unit was one that was shut down...pretty yellow tape and all...it was the perfect unit too...then entire basement was underground.

I used to talk to my old manager there on and off since we moved....haven't heard from him since the bust....

As for what tips folks off that a growshow is a growshow? SMELL.....no matter WHAT, eventually the plants totally smell....without ventilation the moisture ruins the walls etc...mildew smell.....with ventilation (which the 'good' shows have) you'll smell it a mile away once the plants are a decent size....

gigi is exactly right, lot's of people use absurd amounts of electricity for perfectly legit reasons, as long as you pay your bill on time nobody will pay notice.

I have 2000 watts of light over this aquarium and the pumps, chiller and other equipment use up another 2000 watts, you could grow some serious pot with that much electricity and there are no cops knocking on my door ;-)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/orion76/DSC_0028111.jpg

It's when a certain street is consuming more electricity than is being billed for that they become suspicious. I've heard that some growers steal electricity because they are scared the power company will tip off the police on large electricity consumption and then end up getting busted because they are stealing electricity ;-)

Exactly....silly silly people.....I know people who pay 10k a month in hydro....for years....

I've also seen HUGE set ups to steal hydro....not only did they steal hydro, they also completely fucked up the hydro companies equipment (even the wires in your house are property of the hydro company)....I mean MANGLED...spliced up to all hell straight from the box...

It's how the police choppers find them in the UK, even with all the windows blacked out the heat they give off is easy to pick up with the thermal camera's.

I seen a bust on one of the many reality police shows we've got over here now and and expert comented on the thermal images saying "a house should only show up that hot when it's on fire"

Infrared....yes, it shows heat...but not light ;)

And yes, police can, and do on occasion, fly around with an infrared camera looking at houses....specifically if they are suspect of a show...

But, Timon's fishtank, for example, would put out ALOT of heat and would also look suspicious if it were scanned....

For the most part, cops only use infrared if they have a suspected target....it's expensive to fly your cops around the city all the time. ;)

Northumbria Police(my local law) have 3 choppers, all fitted with infared, thermol imaging, sun spot lighting and some of the best camera equiptment going. They can fly over any house whenever they feel like it and it's a surprise not to see one at least once a day, but they try to refrain after 10pm and only do if they're chasing someone.

As for Timon's tank with the kind of lighting he's running I'd be surprised if he's not got hood fans fitted, plus the chiller is so needed just to stop the fish cooking

LOL...wouldn't want to see those little fishies floating... :zoinks:

point was, just because it's hot, doesn't mean it's a grow show....I'd hate to have to do infrared scans in the winter with all the basement stoves running day and night for heat...it's cold here in Canada. ;)

We have 1 news chopper we see occasionally here, and several rescue/emergency choppers that are used...especially during fire season.....but, I'm in a small town of 100k pop. In Vancouver we see choppers every day....but it still costs them money to fly 'em...it would be cheaper to just send bicycle cops out riding past known grow territories and 'sniff' em out....haha

In Vancouver we see choppers every day....but it still costs them money to fly 'em...it would be cheaper to just send bicycle cops out riding past known grow territories and 'sniff' em out....haha [/b][/quote]

Its the sodium lights for hydroponics that give it away normally .. there is a glow at night that helicopters can pick up as though it was on fire and a beacon in the night sky.. allegedly

Hahaha, I just caught this......sorry...but, if that were true, like 30% of all of BC would be glowing.... :P
It's how the police choppers find them in the UK, even with all the windows blacked out the heat they give off is easy to pick up with the thermal camera's.

gigi is exactly right, lot's of people use absurd amounts of electricity for perfectly legit reasons, as long as you pay your bill on time nobody will pay notice.

I've heard that some growers steal electricity because they are scared the power company will tip off the police on large electricity consumption and then end up getting busted because they are stealing electricity ;-)
i take it that the cameras are for your dutch based clownfish hardcore site.

I lived in Coquitlam the first time, then in Port Coquitlam before moving to Port Moody the second time.

Your only a hater because I had the Irish Bar next to my place :groucho:
