View Full Version : 3 months training down the drain

I push myself heavy in the gym, it seems too much almost 2 weeks ago. I was doing leg presses on the leg incline machine with 9 45's on each side. On the 4th set, and strong, perfect rhythm, I'm expecting to finish 10 reps, so sure of it, I have my hands on the back of the seat instead of my kness to spot. 5 reps go, 6, 7, 8 comes down, and I'm about to push up, but my legs go to total failure, give out and everything comes crashing down on me.
Fortunately for me that there was a safety stop, enough for me to get out from underneath. But the weight dropping down on me put my knees by my ears. I thought I was lucky and got away from any damage. So thursday rolls around, I'm a little sore, I have dinner with Serge and Sue, thinking "Yeah it's all good". Around midnight, all of the sudden I am sore. Sore in my shoulders, my arms, forearms, calves, legs, everywhere. It's so bad, I can't even stand up. I take off Friday, take some anti inflamatory and rest. By end of weekend, I can move, but I look like a 70 year old man limping around.
I get my massage therapist to work on me by tuesday, and I feel a new man for the rest of the week. Almost normal. Come up to this weekend past, was feeling pretty good, in fact on Saturday I joined a boxing gym. Sunday rolls around, morning feel strange in the legs, but nothing major. My sisters were down so my baby sister gives mw a theurapatic massage for my lower back. By afternoon, my legs are feeling tingly, I feel it walking up stairs. By the end of the night, I'm having problems getting up from a sitting position, and everything hurts again, almost exactly like 11 or so days ago.
I am in serious pain getting ready for work, I make it to the office, but I'm limping bad again. I needed help getting out of my chair in the office, and I'm tired. I can't keep my eyes open, which makes no sense, I had over 7 hours sleep the night before. I call my Doctor and get an appt within that hour. I'm at the Docs for an hour and a half, get treated, get some scripts and I'm told I'm going in for an MRI that night.
The MRI is an experience. The tech is filipino, and there's a lot of talk about the P.I. etc. So he now tries to get me in the tube for the MRI. I got my arms on my side and my hands are crossed over my chest. All the sudden I'm trying to get shoved in this thing, and the first thing to come to mind is Serge's old saying of "Shoving 10 lbs of shit in a 5lbs bag". I can't fit in it. So instead of having my arms by myside, I now have to have them over my head, ala super man. So I have to lay in this thing for 35 minutes with my arms over my head. Loud as fuck in that thing, the ear plugs really don't help much. Good thing I can sleep in pretty much anywhere.
I get out, the tech is helping me turn, and then comments, "Your arm is the size of my leg". Which is something I've never heard before (heavy sarcasm). So tomorrow I get to find out if it's a herniated disc. It would make sense, the muscle failure and pain all over my body.
Doctor tells me to stay in bed for the next few days, my appt is tomorrow to find out how exactly I fucked myself up. All this to get in better shape. Wonderful.
Wow, that doesn't sound like a herniated disk to me Ant. I had one 3 years ago -- l4/l5 rupture with disintegration and floating debris in my spinal canal. I couldn't walk for months without pain and massive discomfort, even after the two spinal epidural fills I got at the Mayo.
This sounds, not to scare you, more severe than a ruptured disk if you've got pain and numbness and tingling all over your body. Mine was limited to the right side sciatic nerve, but even that was enough to drive me crazy nearly.
Keep us posted, this sounds like something you definitely need to get worked on by the doctors, not the massage therapists.
That’s terrible news mate. :(
I agree with Kimmy in that it sounds more serious than a herniated disk, as my mother has suffered with one and I don’t recall her having some of the troubles you’ve had.
Toni and I have our fingers crossed for you and hope you can pull back from this as quickly as possible.
See, I kept telling you being lazy is better for you. :(

a rumptured disc in your lower back can cause your ciatic nerve to go nuts down both legs, down your hamstrings to your calves. even worse if he tore a muscle in his lower back, every time that spasms hes going to get the pain down the legs. but it would not interfere with actual mobility, other than pain. i hope its not a compressed vertibrae. best of luck to you anthony, i hope it is something irritating, but minor!

Nah, I've got some minor arthritis in c2-c4 that gives me grief on occasion, the rupture was totally unrelated... one minute I was in BC fly fishing and kayaking, the next day I was in unstoppable tears trying to get through the Vancouver airport to baggage claim.
Sciatic nerves are fuckers though. The only real way I can describe how it felt when it ruptured is something akin to having a line of meathooks run down your leg from your ass to your ankle, and someone trying to pull the muscles off the bone with them. :(

From your post, I take it you were pressing 800 plus pound of iron on the Smith machine?
I take it with that amount of weight your knees were wrapped?
I take it you were wearing a belt?
If you came crashing down, I take it you had no spotters?
I've been there and done that! Hope you feel better man!

I don't wear a belt for anything. It was an incline leg press.
I don't think the belt would have helped.

both of these descriptions are very accurate....

Sciatic nerves are fuckers though
Hell yes! :( I have had intermittant problems for a few of years now. The worse was about 2.5 years ago and a lovely num/hurt for 4.5 months. Had a reminder of that a couple months ago, when I had about six weeks of it return. With me I get stress in the shoulder blades and back, and when the muscles get too knotted it seems to catch a nerve there. Not at all fun.

Good News!
It's not a Herniated Disc! My L5 Disc is protruded from my mishap and has been causing havoc, impinging nerves and what not. Which explains the pain and numbness I've been having in my hands, arms, legs, feet, etc.
I cannot tell you how happy I am that it is not herniated. Though it will take some therapy to get me back to normal, I'm very, very, very happy.
I was told to take the rest of the week and stay in bed, to recover some more.
I will be wearing thick ass belts from now on for all my heavy lifts.
Thank you everyone for the positive thoughts and well wishes!
Excellent news :okthumb:

Hope you take care of yourself and get to feelin' better soon - glad it's no more serious than it is.
When you get back to working out, make sure you very carefully work your way back up to where you were.
Figure out when you think you can start back up, then WAIT A WEEK before you start.
Figure out what you think you can handle, THEN TAKE 25% OFF that #.
I know more people who have turned a one-time injury into a long-term problem by jumping back in too quickly. Never been much for the gym, but my doctor once got a little testy with me for considering a fast-pitch softball tournament (5 games in 36 hours, basically) a "light workout" after I lost an argument with my hamstring.

I've watched pro bodybuilders work out and no one ever touches that kinda weight without wraps and a belt and spotters even on a machine. 805 Lbs is more than impressive. You're a strong sumbitch...but being strong and crippled doesn't do anyone any good.
I'm not gonna kick you when yer down at all so don't take this like that, but for shit shakes...use wraps and belts in the future and have spotters on either side of the machine if you still wanna play with that weight on presses and hack squats - with that kinda weight, yer knee's can only take so much.
Go heavy...go heavy on squats - with a spotter and a rack. 805 on a leg press to failure makes no sense.

fuck 805 is too much. I rep at around 600. i wouldn't think of going over that because of my knee, and the fact that i most assuredly would have muscle failure at over 700.

I figured I'd wait to hear the news before commenting, Anthony. I'm glad to hear you'll recover, well, as long as you're smart about it..and, you're a smart guy. Don't expect healing to be immediate..these things take a long time....
Since you already have pretty strong back muscles, there's a good probability that it was to your advantage...so, good for you.
That sciatic pain reminds me of a high pitched drill the dentists use, screaming all the way down.....beating to a rhythm of its own...those cortisone shots....ow.....
The only thing I can add to this is : AVOID SURGERY. Once you get on that surgical merry go round, you never get off.
Glad the news is positive.
