Is it just me who thinks its completely absurd and ridiculuous how some feel that the "board persona" they see here is NOT a direct relation to the person they do business with?

I mean day after day on the boards we all see people act and talk like they are in highschool still. Mentioning they showed their 14yr old greenguy....confessing to a cocaine habit for nothing more then attention and views....ripping people off for what most consider peanuts...lying about what they make or can do...etc the list goes on

How valueble is your impression on people based on how you see them act.?

And then i see everywhere people saying...ohhh thats his/her board personality, he/she isnt so childish in person...That is bullshit. If you cant contain yourself and hold yourself accountable for what you say on the boards, in front of thousands, how can i trust you to do it in a private business relationship where money and commitment are involved.

I know it would be a stretch for me to get into any fierce arguements via message boards (dont get me wrong pissing can be fun) but why is it so common for people with a future to "weed" themselves out and show the industry their true mentality and true colors.

This is one big advantage we have over "brick and morter", theres no race, color, or bad suits, just what you project yourself as, and what your performance shows you to be. Why dont people use this to there advantage instead of always "playing" the retard card?

I have to agree!

What you see in these pixels, is my attempt at bringing myself across.

I still wouldn't cut myself off because someone has a split persona though :)

Great Question. I think it's normally a cop out, I admit to using it myself from time to time. You say something you shouldn't have or that offended somebody and now you say "well you don't really know me it's just my board persona"

I have noticed though that on Pornojunkies I'm a lot more timmed that I am On GFY and I'm a lot more well spoken on Porncity then I am on JustBlowme.

Perhaps I need to see a shrink

Understood, and i prefer it as well, at minimum a good phone call to check the waters.

But are you completely unmoved by how someone comes accross to you on the boards?

They ARE JUST message boards, but it is also one of our industries most commonly used media and communication systems.

If a brick and mortar supplier called me out of the blue and called me a cocksucker or a dipshit, i wouldnt just right it off to..."haha just a phone call, Im sure he's a nice guy in public!"..lol

Yeah, at first it got to me, and I told everyone to get fucked, as I couldn't figure out who was who, the pretenders from the real deal, the all mouths from the big wigs... That part bothered me a lot.

so I now go to shows, and/or try to meet people in their environment ( I am a much better judge of reality when I can see the person) Then sometimes the board does show me a different person and I am OK with that...

but that can be a good thing or a bad thing dependign on the person .

You can tell me from now till dooms day that one personality has nothing to do with the other and I say Bullshit!!!

Somewhere in your brain there is a stop sign for the tounge or fingers for this example, but a light must go off in your head telling you that that thought is better left to your private thoughts!!!

Nothing wrong with being silly and showing some of your colorful personality but some comments are better left unsaid.

To me there are people on the boards that come off witty and inteligent those people I want to get to know and look further into forging a business relationship..The drama mongers and such set off a red flag to avoid them. Now I may be missing out on a great business relationship but first immpressions are hard to get around!

The boards have always been a great place for me to learn who not to do business with more than anything else. If I want to know more about someone I either get them on ICQ or on the phone. And then I try to meet them in person at shows (I typically go to up to 8 a year).

Heres a double promo of sorts.

I agree with many of you I think the excuse of "Thats just my board persona" is total and utter bullshit. With me what you see on here is pretty much what you get in person. That being said though.... you have to keep in mind that for the past couple of years my responsibility has been to generate interest/pageviews on Oprano.

That being said I had a chance to spend some time with LAJ last year at Cybernet Expo and after meeting face to face we realized that we agreed on a lot of things instead of us both thinking the other was a complete asshole.

My point is that You can get a damn good business sense about some people [as witnessed yesterday] from the boards but the shows have a way of putting things in concrete.

So if your considering the San Diego show... you should take the time and go. Its cheaper admission...I found the seminars very interesting [so much so that Jay has corraled me into sitting on a panel this year] and because the show is smaller you really can spend a lot more time with people you are interested in doing business with.

I don't lurk, I read in between working on things if I have a chance. Managing the web biz and brick and mortar stuff keeps me pretty busy.

I really don't have anything relevent to add to the thread, I don't have a board persona.

This is me. Except if I want to promote something, then the shit might get pretty deep.

No probs! I just wanted a chance to call you a bastard, buddy! :D

Care to share what you're doing with the brick and mortar? Nosey fucks would like to know. B)
